Trump says he would allow Chinese automakers to build cars in US

President Trump said Friday he would permit Chinese automakers to move manufacturing to the U.S. over the protest of American automakers.

“If China wanted to come in and open a plant to build their cars here, I’d be OK with it,” the president told Fox News’s Laura Ingraham on “The Ingraham Angle.”

“Japan does it, but they hire our people,” he continued. “The big thing is they hire our people.”

The president’s comment comes ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Washington, D.C., in two weeks. The Chinese leader is expected to bring a large business delegation with him during this visit, Reuters reported.

Trump touted his “very good relationship” with Jinping ahead of this bilateral summit, telling Ingraham the meeting will “be interesting.”

“People say, ‘Oh, he spies on us.’ Well, we spy on him too,” the president said. “We’re very good at it also, so we get along.”

Former President Biden imposed a regulation in 2025 that effectively bans Chinese automakers from selling or manufacturing passenger vehicles in the U.S. Additionally, the U.S. has over 100 percent tariffs in place on Chinese electric vehicles.

Last week, the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, a trade organization representing all major American automakers, asked congressional leaders in a letter to place a “permanent ban” on Chinese-made cars in the U.S.

” over the protest of American automakers. “

I don't see Musk/Tesla protesting.
Tesla is doing very well in China/Asia, making cars in Shanghai and selling them in China/Asia.
GM/Ford are not doing great in EV’s right now and its not because of Chinese auto makers either.

There shouldn’t be any chi-coms allowed in this country, and especially no communist country that we should be doing business with.

I doubt China would bother if they had to pay Americans and follow environmental laws.

Doing so would allow the US companies to steal the technology they use, as BYD did to Tesla.

I’m not sure that the US has the infrastructure for the Ford Expedition-sized EV’s sold in China. Like it or hate it, the PRC has really invested in charging technology.

Why not?
US car companies like Ford/GM have been making cars in China for decades.
As we speak, Tesla has a gigantic EV factory in Shanghai doing excellent business.

Trump might wish that the US was an attractive place to start new factories, but it might not be yet.

"US car companies like Ford/GM have been making cars in China for decades."

I don't, and wouldn't drive any of those cars. Ford made cars in Nazi Germany too, and only stopped building them there when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, and we declared war on Japan. Up until that same time, he refused to make any changes to his factories to help the U.S. war effort. Ford was an anti-semite. Then he sued our government after the war for reparations for his German factories that were damaged by allied bombing...and won.

How many buyers would there be for a Chinese car regardless of where it was made?

"Well, Democrats are allowed here."

And they should be wiped out too. They have been a danger to our national security for decades.

I’m good with ANYTHING that undercuts our labor unions - that simple.

"I doubt China would bother if they had to pay Americans and follow environmental laws."

They'd also have a problem complying with quality control.

“Trump might wish that the US was an attractive place to start new factories, but it might not be yet.”

Is that why Musk is building a GARGANTUAN Terafab in Texas right now as we speak, the world's biggest/most advanced chip factory?
Plus a massive solar panel factory in Texas?

“I don't, and wouldn't drive any of those cars.”

Their made in China cars were sold mostly in China/Asia.

” Ford made cars in Nazi Germany too, and only stopped building them there when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, and we declared war on Japan”

It was perfectly legal for US companies to manufacture products in Germany pre WW II.
