The crazed plane passenger who was duct-taped and zip-tied on a flight to New Jersey first flipped over a discussion about religion with his seatmate, a controversial Messianic rabbi who’s a best-selling author dubbed a “Doomsday prophet.”
Author Jonathan Cahn said that now-fired Arizona realtor Arthur Layne Lundeen, 67, allegedly started hurling racist and homophobic slurs after first screaming at him that “Jesus is bulls–t.”
“I was the unidentified passenger and I was actually attacked, 30,000 feet in the sky. I was attacked on that plane,” Cahn revealed in a YouTube video Monday.
“I have never seen someone change in a split second from light to dark as I saw then, as if something had taken him over,” Cahn said. “He went from the friendliest guy in the world to this dark person.”
Cahn leads the Beth Israel Worship Center in Wayne, New Jersey, part of the Messianic Jewish movement that believes Jesus is the messiah, making it generally considered a branch of Christianity.
He is also known for his controversial books, especially his debut 2011 novel, “The Harbinger,” which draws parallels between the 9/11 attacks and the destruction of the Kingdom of Israel, linking the events as a divine warning.
Another book, 2015’s “The Mystery of the Shemitah,” suggested a great global catastrophe was imminent, with the New York Times calling him a “Doomsday prophet.”
Cahn claimed it was the cover of his newest novel, “The Altar of Pergamon,” that “triggered” Lundeen after they had been chatting amiably on last Thursday’s Newark-bound American Airlines flight.
Cahn said he referenced “the reality of the real power of god on Earth and in our lives,” leaving Lundeen irate and “cursing Jesus” and “blaspheming Jesus and God.”
He claimed Lundeen then started saying, “It’s all bulls–t. Jesus is bulls–t.”

whatever you say. If I am stuck with a bible banger who won’t shut up on an airplane, I’d be miserable and tune him out.
I would not consider that a “good thing”, would probably ask for another seat.

If a person makes an unsolicited statement of their religious belief, is that protected speech.
BTW in Europe they curtailing free speech—of people speaking in parliament—whenever such speech incites violence. There are courts today who would jail Cahn because he is guilty of another’s outburst.
Discretion would indicate that the assumption that someone on an airplane wants to hear about another passenger’s religion is crude, stupid and selfish.
People don’t have simple manners anymore.
Everyday life was a lot better when it was understood that certain topics of discussion were inappropriate for certain environments.
That’s one way of looking at it. And still, unsolicited religious speech is protected speech.
Then keep it in the public square, where those who don’t want to hear it can walk away.
Private concerns - like an airline - can make and enforce any speech and conduct rules they like.

That is true, but let’s not flip the script. You do realize Lundeen was charged with disorderly conduct and second-degree assault.

Well, I take that back. There is some truth to that so I get your point.

We have no guarantee of ‘Freedom of Speech’ everywhere and under every circumstance. The right doesn’t operate in every environment.

I don’t think there’s any confusion there, really. It’s spelled out by the Department of Transportation. Airlines make rules, but airlines can’t discriminate and single out people for any remarks about the reality of God at work in our lives.
That sounds like good advice for our current, intolerant and violent age.
I sat next to a young (22 ish) Mormon girl. She asked how God could do it, listen to all our thoughts and prayers. I said I don’t know. I thought she was sweet.
Another time, I was using my Mac and my seat mate asked me what computer I was using. Apple was about 3% of the market at that time. I told him I was using an Apple Macintosh. He innocently said, oh I didn’t know they were still in business. Ouch.
I think I could talk and listen to anyone sane and sensible. Unfortunately, that they be the exception these days.
I don’t see where they’ve singled anyone out for speaking about God in the current incident.
But they did remove that woman who started preaching to a plane full of people, and the airline was within its rights to do so. She even bragged that she appreciated preaching on a plane because the passengers had ‘no choice’ but to listen to her.
the passengers, crew and airline felt very differently about it and she was rightly kicked off the flight. (She probably enjoys thinking of herself as some kind of martyr now...)
I never talk about religion unless they ask me, I am frequently asked about faith or prayer when I fly. It is uncanny. However this usually only happens in coach, never when I fly first class.
