Powerful Category 2 Hurricane Lowell made a rare direct hit on Hawaii's western islands Monday night Hawaii time, with rain and wind continuing to intensify as state officials report thousands of power outages on both Kaua'i and Oahu, the state's most populous island.
While the storm's center is not expected to make landfall, the definition of a direct hit is when a hurricane passes within a distance that is up to twice the length between the center of the storm and the maximum winds, which in Lowell's case is 60 miles.

We have friends on Kaui. They told us 45-50 MPH winds for a bit, some higher gusts, and now it’s gone.
Did keep them up all night, as they are not used to this.
Fox is weather-hyping. Was not a “hit.” Yes KAua’i was affected, but not “hit.”

In baseball, I can proudly say that I had a direct hit pretty much every time I swung the bat. Eat your heart out Ted Williams.
Somebody tried to sell Hawaii as the state safest from natural disasters (tornados, floods, wildfires, blizzards, and hurricanes). I never bought into that. With all that coastline and the active volcanoes (and the wildfire a few years back), something was gonna git you.

From the title, I was expecting to read about a Cat 4 or 5. Raised in Miami in the 60s and 70s, I know what a “powerful hurricane” is. This measly Cat 2 is not it.

Yes, but depends where you are. Different names for same thing….a tropical cyclone is what they are. In the Atlantic they are called hurricanes.
This story is nothing but climate change BS. There have been over almost 200
“Tropical cyclones” recorded to have passed near/over the islands.
What is rare is calling them hurricanes. So THAT is the point of distinction? Did you see that anywhere in this socalled report?
In that regard, I'd heard eastern New Mexico America was the safest place - too bad it's mostly armpit country.
I was at Waimia Plantation a couple of years before that was the worst hit area of Iniki.
