The number of applicants dropped by 87% when fees were raised to $100,000 last year.
Good.
Companies should prioritize hiring American workers over foreigners.

I would make an annual fee
Given recent US policies, I would never advise an American to go into technology. It’s all Indians and H1-Bs. They will keep you out of the job, or if you get the job, they will keep the salaries low. Tech used to be a good field, but I don’t think that’s true anymore. Now, if the cost of an H1-B goes up to $200,000, perhaps young Americans will have a sensible reason to seek a career in that field.
Not anymore.
Its fallen sharply.

If you are really good, go work for Musk (SpaceXAI, Tesla, Neuralink; Boring Company etc) and make lotsa money.
Back in 1970 Engineers, doctors and lawyers were considered, at least in my circles, as equivalent in pay and status. I spent a career in engineering. But I was in the military side where, for the most part, I didn’t compete against foreigners. But in the rest of the economy, the competition was direct and fierce. I’ve known several commercial engineers who were barely earning more than technicians. All due to H1B’s or, and this is critical, competition with Indians who do their work over the internet and never leave India. A friend had to work with his replacement in India. He put his work on the web at night, and the Indian worked on it in their day. He said from conversation, and I don’t recall the exact number, but the Indian was earning a tiny fraction of his salary and living high and large.
If I was leaving high school today, I’d get a plumber’s license or an electrical certificate and aim at one day owning my own business. Read “The Millionaire Next Door.”
Make it $500,000, and let’s see if we can get it to zero applicants. The start shipping the ones already here, home.

Good. All this is done to undercut the cost of American workers. My career has been in consulting and we have been an absolute pox upon the American workforce. Every discussion Ive had has been about how cheap H1bs are and how there might be a contract where we dont have to pay benefits. Nothing about quality of deliverables or workforce. I have routinely gotten into trouble during these meetings with my opinion.
This wont work. There is no enforcement mechanism. The DHS doesn’t even track how many leave back to India. The visa is just a pass to get off the plane and through customs...
