Urine trouble, Mount Everest.
After standing the test of time for 50 million years, the world’s tallest mountain is under threat from an unlikely source: our pee.
Urine deposited on glaciers is enough to melt over 150 tons of ice and snow on Mount Everest every year, according to an a-thaw-calyptic study in the Regional Environmental Change scientific journal, as reported by the Independent.
“Urine, with a temperature of around 37°C (human body temperature), causes the ice to melt,” wrote the study authors, who were sent by Nepal’s Survey Department to determine the impact of humans on Everest.
The international team of scientists studied the Khumbu Glacier, the home of the Everest base camp on the mountain’s Nepalese side. Hundreds of people congregate there each year before attempting to summit the 29,035-foot wonder.
These throngs have turned this majestic pinnacle into a “Burning Man”-esque tent city producing disruptive noise, Himalayan trash mounds, and of course, mountains of human waste.
While climbers have been required to pack out their poop in bags since 2024, climbers still relieve themselves directly onto the ice.

I’m not much of a hard core environmentalist, but this kind of pisses me off.
They need to build permanent facilities at the base camp.
I'll remember this next winter when I need to shovel the driveway.

Actually, the better approach would be to stop idiots from climbing the mountain. We stop people from going to environmentally fragile caves, parks, tundra, monuments, etc. If the situation is so dire on Mount Everest, why not just stop people from going there? Problem solved.

Okay. I’m with you. But if it’s “damaging the environment,” the exact same excuse we use to prevent people from going places like the caves in France or the poles, or any number of other places that use that reason, why is Mount Everest any different? And, yes, I sarcastically clutched my pearls and bowed to the Gaia. My point is, and I grant you couldn’t see me sarcastically clutching pearls; I don’t care. I tend to pee whenever and wherever the urge strikes me. But if the environment is the end-all and be-all of our reasoning, then stop them...or be quiet about it.
I agree on motorcycles too. I was astonished when a bunch of fifty-five plus workers at my final employment went out and bought them. But, fine. It’s their fragile skin and bones at stake. It’s too bad you can’t buy life insurance policies on other people. If so, I’d have paid the difference to upgrade them to Nijas.
