America is surging ahead while Canada stagnates, and that growing asymmetry—not trade alone—is driving the acrimony between two longtime allies.
At first glance, the current American-Canadian trade “war” is absurd. We are neighbors with a long history of close friendship, speak the same language (for the most part), and spring from the same British civilization.
Nearly one million Canadians reside in the United States.
Given the two countries’ natural affinities, Canadians are nearly indistinguishable from Americans.
Both sides have reasonable grievances over trade policy.
Americans don’t like Canada’s perennial trade surpluses of more than $50 billion in a supposedly free-trade zone.
They resent the fact that non-free-market China exports subsidized cheap steel and aluminum through Canada, giving Canadian auto and truck exports a price advantage.
The United States also objects to Canada imposing a surcharge on American digital media companies to subsidize Canadian Indigenous and French-language content.
Americans further resent Prime Minister Mark Carney’s backing out of an apparent deal at the eleventh hour. He apparently hoped to gin up Canadian nationalism on the eve of two key elections in Alberta and Quebec by attacking Trump, who is unpopular in Canada.
Ascendant separatist movements in both provinces threaten to unravel the Canadian nation.
Moreover, Carney expects the dispute to damage Trump on the eve of the U.S. midterm elections, which might reduce his leverage over Canada.
Canada, in turn, resents American demands concerning its importation of Chinese goods as an infringement upon its sovereignty.
It increasingly believes that the sheer size of the United States next door—13 times larger in nominal GDP and nine times larger in population—threatens to overwhelm Canada’s unique culture.

“ You know - England’s retarded stepchild.”
Went to a neighborhood party in DFW where a couple I knew lived. One of their neighbors were Canadians. The canucks were arguing about something and my buddies wife went to talk to her female neighbor. Seems the Canadian dude was having sex with HIS MOTHER! Oh it’s a Canadian thing offered his wife.
Well, thats a very odd tradition we had never heard of…..

George Carlin did a routine where he wondered if more rape occurred in The North Pole or The Equator:
People think it’s the equator because it’s hot down there, they don’t wear a lot of clothing, guys can see women’s t___s, they get horny, and there’s a lot of f_____ going on.
That’s exactly why there’s less rape at the equator, because there’s a lot of f_____ going on. You can tell there’s a lot of f_____ at the equator, take a look at the population figures. Billions of people life near the equator.
How many Eskimos we got, 30, 35? No one’s getting laid at the North Pole, it’s too cold. Guys say to their wives, hey, tonight honey, huh, tonight, huh? Are you crazy, the wind chill factor is 300 below. These guys are deprived, they’re horny, they’re pent up.
In the US, it's usually Mexicans (or Central Americans) leaving trash piles everywhere they go. You'll see Mexicans taking their huge extended families to a picnic at a city park, and then leaving it to look like the city dump despite the fact that there's a trash can only 10 yards away from the area they were infesting. Nobody, not even blacks, can compete with the Mexican propensity to trash every public space (not to mention their own yards).
I forget who told the joke, but this 50 year old guy is in the bar and this 60-something gal starts flirting with him. She’s okay looking despite the age difference.
Then she asks him “Have you ever done Canadian Style sex?”
“Huh?”
“Canadian Style, where you get both the mom and the daughter? Want to try it?”
The guy figures the daughter will be good looking too, so agrees. She brings him back to her house, opens the door and shouts “Hey Ma - you still up!?”
I think it has something to do with the difference between the countries that were originally British colonies and those that were Spanish colonies. You find the same thing in Asia; just look at the difference between urban public spaces in the Philippines and those in Hong Kong or Singapore.
You haven’t been on an indigenous reservation!
I’m not sure about that - is Belize that much cleaner than Guatemala or El Salvador, and are Jamaicans that much cleaner than Dominicans?
Well, Mexicans and other Meso-Americans (at least the poor ones that scuttle across the border) are mostly “indigenous” by ancestry, so perhaps there’s a pattern there.
“Nearly one million Canadians reside in the United States.”
I always find it curious how some are so anti-Mexican in the US but never mention Canadians in the US.
I’ve known Canadians in the US, both in my family, and in IT work for fortune 100, and in grass roots politics and community organizations. Some are good people. Some not so much. The same with Mexicans.
But for some reason people all concerned about immigration and foreigners never mention Canadians.
Little brother syndrome. The big brother is getting straight ‘A’s’, is the QB and is dating the homecoming queen. The little bother’s only claim to fame is he has the same parents. So, to make a name for himself he does stupid stuff, picks fights and runs with a bad crowd. You see it all the time.
I just spent two days in Vancouver. Lovely town, BTW. Very peaceful and orderly.
No regrets I don't speak Mandarin - but I sure could have used a splash of Hindi.
Canada has some great people. It makes me wonder if vote fraud is their biggest problem.
The change in Vancouver since the 1986 world's fair is astounding. What used to be a tidy, European styled city is now a dump. Not even counting the horror of addict alley on East Hastings.
Never saw so many bums in my life.
He is right about the economic disparity, and the resentment it breeds, but the primary issue right now is that Carney and Communist China are colluding against the interests of the United States, at Canada’s expense. Trump knows full well, and has warned the Canadian people that Carney has sold them out and that China is poised to eat them alive.
But they live in a media environment rigidly controlled by the Liberal Party, and get only the government line from CBC and print. Older ones, boomers who have lived in a country with mild and benign governance, appear to be oblivious to the pernicious and dangerous realities of the present domestic crisis. Carney has used Orange Man Bad to distract them completely from the gathering disaster, and remains almost mysteriously popular.
“Canada’s unique culture “
Like MAID and no guns. Praying you get your hip replacement before yearly healthcare quota is reached and you have to go to the US to get it.
One million english speakers versus 10s and 10s of millions of Mexicans, so many that we are asked which country’s language we want and our food packages have both the American language and the language of Mexico on them, and a people who have destroyed our employment base buy taking the jobs and shutting out Americans in entire fields of work?
I wouldn’t even know where to find a Canadian within a 100 miles unless in a hotel or vacation camper, but we can spend all day immersed in non-English speaking Mexican people in most places I have lived, and the crime rate/muder rate/pedophilia and under age sex crimes/ and theft crimes to show for it.
Compare the rates of poverty and crime in Mexico vs. Canada, as well as the level of socioeconomic development in the two countries, and perhaps your curiosity will be sated.
Canadians aren't the ones turning entire swaths of the US into squalid slums and gangland.
Complaining about Canadians in the US while being we’re overrun by and transformed as a society by tens of millions of Mexicans and other Third World people is like the man who complains about a noisy next-door neighbor while his house is being burglarized.
