America is surging ahead while Canada stagnates, and that growing asymmetry—not trade alone—is driving the acrimony between two longtime allies.
At first glance, the current American-Canadian trade “war” is absurd. We are neighbors with a long history of close friendship, speak the same language (for the most part), and spring from the same British civilization.
Nearly one million Canadians reside in the United States.
Given the two countries’ natural affinities, Canadians are nearly indistinguishable from Americans.
Both sides have reasonable grievances over trade policy.
Americans don’t like Canada’s perennial trade surpluses of more than $50 billion in a supposedly free-trade zone.
They resent the fact that non-free-market China exports subsidized cheap steel and aluminum through Canada, giving Canadian auto and truck exports a price advantage.
The United States also objects to Canada imposing a surcharge on American digital media companies to subsidize Canadian Indigenous and French-language content.
Americans further resent Prime Minister Mark Carney’s backing out of an apparent deal at the eleventh hour. He apparently hoped to gin up Canadian nationalism on the eve of two key elections in Alberta and Quebec by attacking Trump, who is unpopular in Canada.
Ascendant separatist movements in both provinces threaten to unravel the Canadian nation.
Moreover, Carney expects the dispute to damage Trump on the eve of the U.S. midterm elections, which might reduce his leverage over Canada.
Canada, in turn, resents American demands concerning its importation of Chinese goods as an infringement upon its sovereignty.
It increasingly believes that the sheer size of the United States next door—13 times larger in nominal GDP and nine times larger in population—threatens to overwhelm Canada’s unique culture.

What is overwhelming Canada’s culture is massive 3rd world immigration. Just to cover the real elephant in the room.
Carney will not be running in the next Canadian election he’ll have Canada set up for his New World Order by then and can move on to destroy something else ,LOL
Canada may be turning into an actual problem.
Their government wishes to double the population through immigration by 2040. Their current immigration priorities include third worlders whose homelands have grievances against the US and people from the People’s Republic of China.
It’s true that Canada has a lot to lose from becoming the Ukraine of North America. But so do we.
British Columbia is practically a Chinese state.
Carney has 91% of his investments in the US and his family lives in NYC he moved Brookfield to the US plus he’s always traveling to the EU to give speeches ,LOL
Perhaps equally as important is the Canadian culture has few people who are happy with the culture change and lifestyle improvements of the first and second great awakenings in the English speaking world. It's not just that left (in the U.S., Canada, and Europe) want to import 3rd worlders without assimilation. It's that the left sees nothing good about our culture worth preserving.
That cultural suicide death wish IMHO is the basis for much of the left's political drive.
Abundance of natural resources. Deficit of good representation.
Utopian think tanks speak grandly of a Canadian “Century Initiative” that would bring in enough immigrants to increase the population to 100 million. But sheer numbers will hardly remedy the country’s underlying demographic and economic stagnation.
How mostly non-Western immigrants are to be integrated, assimilated, and acculturated in a country that has forsaken anything remotely resembling the idea of a melting pot is never explained.
Prof Hanson nails the main problem that Canada faces - foreigners. It used to foreign investment (aka Hongcouver), which made Quebec rich. Now it is all the hangers on that do NOT think like Canadians that are its' doom.

Being into history, I always remember the Canadians had Juno beach alto themselves on D-Day.
Just search "Indians dumping trash in Canada" and you'll get an endless stream of videos of Indian immigrants doing their damnedest to make Canada look as trash strewn as India.
It's genuinely astonishing.
I was at the NBRSA Nationals last week in Holton Michigan. A lot of Canadian shooters are members of NBRSA and compete in our shoots. Nationals shoots have four man teams as part of the event. Four Canucks named their team “51st State” LOL!
Eh? What culture is that?

You know - England's retarded stepchild.
Yep, Canada has open borders (same policy as Biden) and are over run with Indians.

The transformation of Canada was dictated by the irreplacable genetic losses it suffered from 1914-1945. Canada’ loss of its best men during over ten years of savage war reflected a high percentage of its most productive citizens. A higher percentage and more devastating considering its smaller population. Immigration from the third world further altered the cultural fabric. Much of the same has happened in Britain. America is dealing with “allies” and neighbors that are not recognizable. So is their politics.
The same with the “lost generations” in Germany, France, Netherlands, and Italy. Ennui, fatalism, nihilism, hedonism set in. Below replacement birth rates. Loss of belief in God and a better tomorrow. No reason to make progeny.
The GDP per capita gap has widened from $10,766 to $23,757 over the last 25 years.
Alabama is now richer per capita than Canada.
They already had a massive inferiority complex vis a vis big brother America and their economic stagnation has only made it worse.
