Wisconsin Cops Used Flock Over 100 Times To Track a Navy Veteran After He Lawfully Recorded a Traffic Stop

A federal lawsuit claims the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office used the Flock cameras without a legitimate government purpose and in retaliation against the vet for exercising his First Amendment right. {...} Jones was subsequently arrested "for resisting and obstructing," according to a federal lawsuit he filed against the arresting officers and police department. But after being held in custody for five hours, he was released with no citations or criminal charges. An internal post-arrest memorandum reviewed by Reason revealed that Shayhorn's supervisor informed him shortly after the arrest that he'd, in fact, illegally stopped Jones, and he therefore could not compel Jones to produce his identification.

Ok "Flock Freepers," tell me again how we should submit to the constant surveillance of Flock because of "save the children" logic.

This is the giving up of liberty for "little temporary Safety" Ben Franklin was talking about.

I don't expect them to 'flock' to this thread. See, things like the article mention just don't happen....

Deprivation of rights under color of law is not used nearly enough.

There is no expectation of privacy in public. But on the other hand, the Flock system is open to all kinds of abuse, as shown in this article.

A good compromise might have been to require a warrant for a cop to view a Flock video. But it’s too late now. Cops like the ones in the article have destroyed any public trust in the system.

And further, misuse of the Flock system was the least of the problems here.

We are gonna continue to see stories like this. The system is spreading and it is getting more invasive.

Personally i would say the use of the flock system to search for ways to get the Navy vet IS the main issue.

Proving the axiom once again there is no power you give the government that it will not abuse.

Which is why our constitution was written specifically to limit power, not give power to the government.

The capability of abuse via constant surveillance for extreme oppression is so easy to implement it should terrify everyone.

There is no expectation of privacy in public.

Wrong.

Carpenter v. United States

https://supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/585/16-402/

A person does not surrender all Fourth Amendment protection by venturing into the public sphere. To the contrary, “what [one] seeks to preserve as private, even in an area accessible to the public, may be constitutionally protected.” A majority of this Court has already recognized that individuals have a reasonable expectation of privacy in the whole of their physical movements.

I would guess that flock makes it’s real money by selling the information it collects from it’s cameras.

Call it the Zuckerberg model.

I see Flock being very useful if and only if every one who accesses it has to log in personally and state the reason for the access. No anonymous access to just anyone in the department.
Also needs to be a regular audit of usage by a civilian board.

And I don't think the "save the children" logic is a trivial thing.

There is no expectation of privacy in public.

There is an expectation of not having your movements tracked, stored and accessed by anybody that thinks they need to. We are already under a surveillance state. F these cameras, bring em all down I say.

they have had traffic surveillance cameras out for over 30 years. And just the last year or so they, someone, started calling them Flock cameras. They did the same damned thing to people 5... 10.... 15 years ago!! Where were all you tin foil hat dudes then!!

Ya get one friggin instance where it fits perfectly into your “Flock Camera Hysteria” and here ya go!! We’re Doomed!!

The guy did nothing wrong!! He was tracked with a “Flock Cameras” and it was found HE STILL DID NOTHING WRONG!!

Stop trying so hard! It’s embarrassing...

How many fracking cameras are pointed at Mark Zuckbucks house?
How many and Nancy Pelosi's?
How many cameras are pointed at mosques?

It's one of those situations where the government is daring people to raise a stink, I mean what are we really going to do about this?

Maybe if the information is only accessible with a legal warrant issued by a judge for a specific crime but even then it could still be abused by the private company that owns flock cameras

Strawman and and intentionally false argument.

The traffic cameras out for decades were stop-light camera or toll camera, and they specifically tracked running red lights or tolls. Also, some speeding cameras again for actually speeding, not tracking.

None of those were used to track movements, Flock watches large swatches of areas specifically for the tracking / surveillance with no suspected crime being commited, unlike all the cameras you are referring to.

You rant is rejected for being a sophist tactic and for its feigned emotional tone if indignant righteous anger.
