In 2020, Congress passed a law allowing the Treasury Department to mint special $1 coins for the 250th anniversary.
That law states that images of living people can not be shown on the reverse side of the coin but allows for the front to showcase Trump's face.
Donald Trump's brand-new gold-colored $1 coin sparked chaos at the US Mint as a record rush of buyers overwhelmed its website and left customers stuck in massive virtual queues.
The Treasury Department made the coin available on Wednesday as part of the nation's 250th anniversary celebration.
A portrait of Trump's face is featured on the front of the coin with the inscriptions 'Liberty,' 'In God We Trust', and '1776 ~ 2026.'
Despite not being released into general circulation, the Philadelphia-minted coins are legal tender and can be spent like any other US currency.
The government is selling the coin in collector bundles of 25 or 100 per bag, ranging from $61 to $154. Each coin is priced at a markup of more than 50 percent above their actual value.
Online shoppers are being forced to wait upwards of an hour to even access the US mint's webpage in order to purchase the coins.
The coin's release hands Trump a symbolic victory after his administration pushed to place his likeness on US money. His policy breaks with a centuries-old tradition against featuring living figures on American currency.
Despite their gold appearance, the coins contain no gold and are made mostly of copper, along with nickel and manganese.

$61 for 25 dollar coins, sounds like a bargain.
The US mint has been issuing special coins and currency for years. These have special coloring and artwork to comemorate various people and events. They are considered legal tender. The Trump coin is not something unprecedented.
“staggering price revealed”? It’s the same price as other gold color special release coins. If you prefer, you can get 2025 Native American $1 Coins for the exact same price. Or pick from several other options, same price.
The only way Trump was ever getting on currency is if he did it himself.

I signed in to the Mint at 8:30 PDT and was in the Queue for about 45 minutes. I got in at 9:15 (15 minutes after they went on sale) and was able to purchase two bags of 100 coins each. They took my order, but it was on the backorder list. They are minting another lot, and I will get them then.
By 9:30, all the backorders were filled, and they are now “Not Available,” which means they are permanently sold out. I do not mind the extra wait; They are unique. I will get them eventually, and that is fine, as they will only appreciate in value.

They have no gold, so what are they really worth? Certainly not the price of the asking, unless the sucker who buys them figures by waiting awhile another sucker will pay even more. I have enough problem just getting by without investing in something like this. Maybe they could put Alfred E. Neuman’s picture on them. At least thhat might make them a bit more realistic. Mad Magazine collectors might buy a few.
I have several rolls of Kennedy half dollar silver, not circulated and their value is up around three grand.
