Shein and Temu items could face €20 levy in France’s crackdown on ultra-fast fashion

Imports of small parcels from China have already fallen by up to 40 per cent since a separate €3 EU levy came into force in July.

France is cracking down on ultra-fast fashion with a new fee that eventually reach almost €20 per garment.

The levy, which comes into force on 1 September, targets major e-commerce platforms including Shein.

It follows legislation passed by the French parliament in June to regulate companies known for selling large volumes of lower quality clothing at rock-bottom prices.

It is part of a push to rein in Asian e-commerce giants including Shein, Temu and AliExpress, which have exploded in popularity in France in recent years.

Exploiting a rule used for personal items and personal gifts, Chinese companies were running Amazon-like distribution into the USA for cheap Chinese stuff, and not paying any duty whatsoever.

It took Trump to motivate the EU to fix this problem in their own territory.

A lot of these Chinese places selling clothes get terrible reviews. They advertise with pictures of really lovely fabrics and design, and then when you get the item it’s nothing like the picture.

Polyester garments are a plague. They are unhealthy to wear and the fibers can't be recycled except into black plastic packaging containers. When polyester garments are donated because they fall apart quickly, they don't sell well and end up as nonbiodegradable obstacles to nature in landfills; in third world nations that do not have recycle or landfill programs, polyester rags end up choking their waterways, fouling their beaches and endangering wildlife. Pox on cheap polyester garments.
