A teachers' union has been given a harsh reality check by Seattle's new superintendent after threatening to delay the start of the academic year with a strike.
Ben Shuldiner castigated the Seattle Education Association (SEA)'s threat to walk out unless a 12 percent pay increase was authorized by revealing the huge salaries that public school teachers in the city already earn.
The majority take home $142,584 per year, according to a letter Shuldiner sent to parents on Sunday.
Seattle Public Schools (SPS) teachers are paid a base salary of $118,000 for 180 days' work, plus an additional $3,298 for five contractual days, $2,638 for four tech days, and $17,932 for Time, Responsibility and Incentive pay, Shuldiner claimed.
This total compensation 'does not include other benefits like retirement, stipends, extra hours, or other payments that some teachers receive,' the letter added.
Shuldiner's decision to stand up to the union has triggered shockwaves in the famously liberal city, where left-wing unions are used to getting what they want.
He said: 'I have never seen anything like this outside of Washington.
'I am not saying the teachers don't deserve this. I am only saying I wish I got this when I was a teacher. I also want to make sure that the community knows that this is already in their contract.'
SEA's president is Ibijoke Idowu, who was recently found to have 'more likely than not' grabbed a third-grade special education student so hard he was left with bruises by a city investigation into her behavior.
She remains suspended even after being elected as head of the teachers' union.
SEA has demanded 'living wages' for lower-paid staff members, increased classroom resources, lower staff-to-student ratios and enhanced support systems for special education programs.

Trying to figure out which methods employed by a “city investigation” could leave bruises on a child’s body.
Is this idiot “journalist” a DEI hire?
Sounds just like the type person who should be helping children learn. /s

Do these “writers” know about proofreading?
180 days? I doubt it. 36 weeks a year? I doubt it.
I don’t like negro butt.
“We’ve detected a malignant ibijoke idowu. An invasive procedure will be required to excise the growth.”
