Nowhere else (except maybe North Korea) will you find a town so eager to honour communist icons as Bloemfontein.
The provincial government building is named after Fidel Castro. There’s a statue of him too. There are streets honouring Karl Marx and Ho Chi Minh.
The ANC set out to turn into a living monument to communism — and ironically, simultaneously, turned the city into a monument of absolute decay.
Here’s the story of Bloemfontein’s decline.

Cheap and better food, reliable cars, Bush and Clinton , Mullet haircuts and the darling of the left and popular media Nelson Mandela?
Well Mandela who your friends and workmates waxed on and on about really did want to end Apartheid but that was the surface reason. What he really wanted was communism in South Africa and he succeeded thanks to the liberal media in the west, Dems and RINOs.
And I tried to warn everyone back then with zero impact.

Let's not leave out one of the most loyal, dedicated, and effective spouses in history.
The lovely and gracious Winnie Mandela! Her embrace of necklacing helped to herald in the Brave New South Africa.
Necklacing - form of execution and torture where a rubber automobile tire, filled with gasoline, is forced around a victim's neck and shoulders and set on fire.
Bloemfontein
Isn’t that where Tommy Akdins was marched into the wire?
Mandela was close to a scumbo named Joe Slovo, a refugee from Soviet Lithuania, an ardent communist and a no good bum. When Mandela became President of South Africa, he gave a key government position to Slovo. Mandela admitted later he and most of the key personnel in the ANC had been ardent communists all along, which they had previously and repeatedly stoutly denied.
Afreakin’ national communists. Winnie tire necklaces, Biden getting arrested trying to free Nelson..... Ah, the good old days. 🙄
I had forgotten that awful torture.
What I understand is why there was never a 3rd option. Maybe a coalition of Boers and nationalist/democratic blacks.
Why just commies or apartheid???
Never mind. That was Magersfontein.
Why weren’t we told of the trenches?
Why weren’t we told of the wire?
Why were we marched up in column,
May Tommy Atkins enquire…
All the result of Reagan in the 80s.
The point of putting Mandela into power was to give the white South African elite time to get wealth out, arrange new citizenship, and bunker down in areas they could control and manage efficiently, like the Western Cape and Cape Town.
Chief Buthelezi would have been a much better leader for Post-Apartheid South Africa.
Bloemfontein is the birthplace of JRR Tolkien when it was part of the Orange Free State.
True, but for that very reason he had little chance of gaining power.
Sad, but true.

The Boers liked apartheid, until the internal political pressure and international economic pressure grew too great for even them.
The Soviet Union wanted to deny Africa resources to the West. South Africa was a great success (for them). After the anti apartheid campaign succeeded and the World’s media cameras moved on to the next crusade South Africa sunk into the dystopian wreck that always happens with Communism.
