There are truths of Nature that we observe and maybe eventually understand. Spelling is made up out of nothingness. Before Webster, spelling was a free-for-all with word resolution largely a phonetic exercise. There is nothing to understand about spelling. It is driven by arbitrary choices on the part of some and memory work on the part of others.
