Santa Monica forced to deploy new tactics as deadly violence descends on popular tourist spot

Santa Monica is putting more cops on the streets after a summer of violence hit the tourist hotspot — including two shootings in just two days.

**SNIP**

Saturday, a knife-wielding man was shot and killed near the Santa Monica Pier after he allegedly charged toward officers.

The following day, a person was shot in the leg during an attempted robbery.

The violence comes after a string of deadly incidents that has put the normally tourist-packed city on edge.

In mid-July, a man was fatally shot in a parking lot near the Pier. Police responding around midnight found an adult male suffering from gunshot wounds.

About a week later, a woman was beaten to death inside a residential care facility. She was attacked in a communal bathroom and found unresponsive.

The woman’s killing marked Santa Monica’s fifth homicide of 2026 — already surpassing the four homicides recorded during all of 2025.

City officials are now emphasizing visibility as they try to reassure residents and visitors that Santa Monica remains safe to visit.

Residents were invited to join officers for “Coffee with a Cop” at Pacific Park on the Pier on Tuesday, with another opportunity scheduled for Thursday.

The increased patrols will cover some of the city’s biggest tourist draws, including the Pier, beach and Palisades Park, as well as downtown and residential neighborhoods.

My first job out of college was on Ocean Park Blvd. in Santa Monica. We’d head to the pier or the promenade for lunch. That was back in the ‘90s, and that’s not the Santa Monica of 2026. A shame what’s happened to it.

The place is a gold mine to the tourist industry. Had to walk around a homeless guy to enter the McDonalds doorway. City doesn’t seem to care.

including two shootings in just two days.

That happened all the time in my precinct. We lost 7-10 homies a week.

And release all offenders without bond. Hey, that works perfectly in New York City. So it should work perfectly everywhere else, too.

It’s fine if they stab and shoot residents but if they attack tourists - can’t have that because it affects businesses. It’s all about the money and those who move it.

I've lived here since '94 and have never seen it worse. At least we don't have the gang war with Venice like we did in the 90's.

The article fails to distinguish dirtbags taking the Room Temperature Challenge from innocent citizens getting murdered in that list of “five homicides this week”. Not all homicides are bad things that should be avoided.
