The future of food is looking a little grim.
In the event we turn all arable land on this planet into a barren heath incapable of growing food, humankind may have to resort to reaping what we sowed by eating our own plastic pollution.
A team of researchers at Southern Illinois University Carbondale just demonstrated that this was possible by using specially engineered yeast to create tasty — and yes, edible — cookies which they 3D printed out of plastic waste.
The yeast breaks down the components of plastic compounds and agricultural byproducts like discarded plant stalks into proteins, fats, acids, and flavorings that we can eat. When these are combined together, the mixture is fed into a 3D printer that spits out cookies of any desired shape.
The researchers chose to print their cookies as the Greek letter µ, creating what they call “µBites” — or micro bites. They haven’t actually eaten one of their µBites yet, as they wait for university approval, but they’re not hedging their bets: the cookies will be safe and tasty. The David Cronenberg film “Crimes of the Future” may prove to be a prophecy after all.

The Earth doesn’t share our prejudice toward plastic. Plastic came out of The Earth. The Earth probably sees plastic as just another one of its children.
Could be the only reason The Earth allowed us to be spawned from it in the first place. It wanted plastic for itself. Didn’t know how to make it. Needed us. Could be the answer to our age-old egocentric philosophical question, “Why are we here?”

The 3D printed part tells you how ridiculous the article is. You can “3D print “ a hamburger but it adds nothing to ground beef to spit it out of machine in a complicated pattern.

The list of ingredients should be interesting.

There are plenty of natural organisms that eat crude oil. They can be found all around natural that seaps in the GOA. When deep water horizon happened the primary means of the oil breaking down in the marsh was microbial life eating it. This is no surprise to real scientists, oil is a slew of hydrocarbons aka carbohydrates ethane is one OH away from ethanol a food that for some humans makes up more than half of their daily kcal intake. Deep under water there are microbes that eat H2S as food if it has Gibbs energy potential evolution will find a way to literally eat it.
These guys broke the plastic down to its base C and H and yeah lots of bugs eat both. You need to look up Lanzatech they have bugs that each toxic CO gas is pure H2 and turn it into over 150 chemicals , ethanol is one of them a slew of different protein and starches is others. You can gasify any carbon material with high temp steam including ANY plastic and get CO and H2 and feed that directly to single cell organisms and get any of those 150+ chemicals , using yeast you can get complex proteins with all 9 essential amino acids this is grad school level chemistry but not some deep blue stuff it’s industrial tech again just call Lanzatech they will come over and build you a 100,000 gallon size vat of what ever you desire.
That is the trust of the article: plastics are indeed degradable.
