New York City minority business owners sue Mamdani in bid to stop city-run grocery store plan

A New York City nonprofit representing hundreds of small supermarkets, bodegas and grocery store owners is suing Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the city in an effort to stop his plan to open five government-owned grocery stores.

The Multicultural Business Coalition, a group representing small business owners, filed a class-action lawsuit in New York County Supreme Court Monday, alleging Mamdani’s plan violates the civil rights of smaller, minority-owned grocery stores as they cannot afford to match the discounts offered by the city-run stores.

“You cannot expect hard-working small business owners to compete with a supermarket that isn’t going to pay rent, won’t have to pay an electric bill and won’t have to buy their products at full price,” Mark Jaffe, the group’s general counsel and president of the Greater New York Chamber of Commerce, told CNN. “They cannot possibly compete because no one will be subsidizing them.”

The city’s law department referred CNN to Mamdani’s office for comment about the lawsuit.

When asked about the lawsuit at a news conference Monday announcing a city parks initiative, Mamdani said he was confident in the legality and importance of his plan.

“We’re talking about delivering five city-run grocery stores in a city of eight and a half million people that has more than 1,000 grocery stores,” Mamdani said, adding two markets in Manhattan and Brooklyn operating on a similar model have not had a negative effect on the bodegas around them.

The markets referenced by Mamdani have been operating for years, managed by the city’s Economic Development Corporation, which rents city-owned properties to private vendors at below-market rates and covers other operational costs.

Manhattan retailer business owners, building owners, and retail business financiers: "Walmart bad because competition."

Mayor Mamdani: "We're opening a government store and that's good."

I read an article that described the plight of these people.

Mamdani has sent out code enforcement officers to all of the protestors businesses to cite them for all kinds of minor offenses.

They are even getting fines for garbage that is being dumped on their front doors overnight.

I think it was NYPost. If I can find it again, I’ll post here.

They should encourage him. With 35% discount on items that will be cheaper than their distributor pricing and they can buy from him. Back when discount stores took off, in the 60’s, the Pharmacies bought toothpaste and mouthwash and the like at retail to get lower pricing.

Maybe the mayor should try to get a cheaper supply of baby formula.

The stuff seems expensive to me [not that I had any rugrats].

Perhaps he can talk some rich NYC guy into entering the business.

Or perhaps a supplement to be added to cow’s milk.

As I recollect, there’s about three added sugars that are supposed to help babies fight off infections.

quotes:

Optimal Slaughter Age [Cattle]

Early Finishing (14–18 months): Maximizes feed efficiency with high lean meat yield.

Late Finishing (20–24 months or older): Increases marbling (desirable in premium beef) but reduces feed efficiency.

The fastest growth occurs between 6 to 12 months of age when feed efficiency is highest.

Most beef cattle are finished between 18–24 months for the best balance of growth rate, feed efficiency, and meat quality.

Should we be eating more veal?

And it doesn’t matter if they voted for Mandami or Cuomo. Half a cup of poison and half a cup of water is still a cup of poison.
