Podcast titan Joe Rogan believes that hip-hop’s relative lack of commercial success in 2026 can be attributed to the Trump administration’s defunding of the USAID.
Rogan made the claims about hip-hop during the Aug. 13 episode of The Joe Rogan Experience with comedian Shane Gillis, Mark Normand and Ari Shaffir.

Rogan made the claims about hip-hop during the Aug. 13 episode of The Joe Rogan Experience with comedian Shane Gillis, Mark Normand and Ari Shaffir.
According to the Council on Foreign Relations, the U.S. Agency for International Development “has been a pillar of U.S. soft power and a source of foreign assistance for struggling countries, playing a leading role in coordinating the response to international emergencies such as the global food security crisis.” Per Reuters, the Trump administration announced in March 2025 that it had cut more than 80 percent of USAID-funded programs.

The real reason they don’t want to renovate it is because Trump. That is there reason for everything. Closing the strait or Hormuz? That’s ok because Trump. Defacing a war memorial, That’s ok because Trump. Canada wants to charge a 400% tariff? That’s understandable because Trump.

Latter day Rap seems to me to be a badge of hipness rather than usefully or actually emotive music. Smiling blandly as you flex your knees and bob your head and move your hands in EXACTLY the same way everyone else is is your sign that you indeed are cool. Now we can put on some real music….
I have a 16 year old son whose playlists and whose friends play lists give me fits of nostalgia and I’m 67.

I despised it from the first second I heard it in the mid 80s.
He was absolutely right about that. It became impossible to find new Rock.....even though Rock was still quite popular. Even now on the radio there are 3-4 classic rock stations and good luck finding one for anything new. Sure there’s (C)rap and pop and country but where’s rock? This because really noticeable around the early 2000s.
(c)rap = rhymes I'd have been embarrassed to come up with when I was in the 3rd grade with a jackhammer in the background. Its not music. Its just noise.

The story is about hip-hop not rap. As disgusting as rap is hip hop is 10x worse. Atonal, mindless childish pablum spewed by children for ignorant minds. I especially despise it because it’s forced down my gullet at stores and tv commercials. I can easily believe it’s some CIA ultra mind-rot from USAID.

I love music, nearly all music. Rock, Pop, Classical, Disco, Jazz, Soul, New Age, etc. You name it, I can enjoy something about it.
But I cannot stomach Rap.
Simply cannot. I have heard perhaps one or two Rap songs that didn’t make me say in the tone of Chris Rock “Turn that sh*t off!”
- Eliminate singing
- Eliminate an original beat
- Eliminate playing musical instruments
- Eliminate harmony and melody
...you are left with ‘rap’. The lowest common denominator of “talent”. ...therefore, “everyone thinks they can make it as a rapper” - which just keeps them all poor. Mission accomplished.
