Podcast titan Joe Rogan believes that hip-hop’s relative lack of commercial success in 2026 can be attributed to the Trump administration’s defunding of the USAID.
Rogan made the claims about hip-hop during the Aug. 13 episode of The Joe Rogan Experience with comedian Shane Gillis, Mark Normand and Ari Shaffir.
Podcast titan Joe Rogan believes that hip-hop’s relative lack of commercial success in 2026 can be attributed to the Trump administration’s defunding of the USAID.
Rogan made the claims about hip-hop during the Aug. 13 episode of The Joe Rogan Experience with comedian Shane Gillis, Mark Normand and Ari Shaffir.
According to the Council on Foreign Relations, the U.S. Agency for International Development “has been a pillar of U.S. soft power and a source of foreign assistance for struggling countries, playing a leading role in coordinating the response to international emergencies such as the global food security crisis.” Per Reuters, the Trump administration announced in March 2025 that it had cut more than 80 percent of USAID-funded programs.

Well, okay! But I have no idea, the excerpt provides no info. (It did, however, repeat two paragraphs, so no room left for the topic lol)
Billy Corgan (guy from smashing pumpkins) said Rap was promoted and rock kicked to the curb when he was at MTV though he never said anything about a “conspiracy” just that he noticed it and it was weird since rock was still popular at that point.
I wouldn’t be surprised if USAid was largely behind its promotion but …i know some younger people and they will say that new rap sucks. They can enjoy older stuff (even from before they were born) but new rap is just bad.

Has rap fallen because violence is less? Or because there are fewer violent crimes, there is less desire for rap?

Not related but funny: in a quiet park someone came through blaring foul-mouthed rap music so some Hispanic guy turned up his Mexican music to drown it out.

I find that very hard to believe, so far as the US is concerned. It’s possible where foreign countries are concerned. USAID NGOs might well have financed rap in foreign countries. The CIA also could have done so.
If rap is dying, it’s because it’s played out. 30 or 40 years is enough, especially since even when rap was big, it was repetitive.
