Company Announcement
Everything Sprouts, LLC, based in Minneapolis, MN is recalling certain lots of Alfalfa Sprouts because it has the potential to be contaminated with Shiga toxin producing Escherichia coli (STEC) or Salmonella bacteria.
Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are organisms that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Escherichia coli (STEC) O26:H11, E. coli O103:H25, and E. coli O168:H8 are three members of this group of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli. STECs cause an acute diarrheal illness (often bloody diarrhea) within a few days of ingestion of the bacteria. Most people recover within a week. However, a subset of infected individuals (especially children < 5 years of age, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals) may develop hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a severe illness characterized by hemolytic anemia (red cell breakdown), thrombocytopenia (low platelet count) and renal failure. HUS can lead to death.
The most common clinical illness caused by nontyphoidal Salmonella infection is gastroenteritis, resulting in nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps, which typically begins 6–72 hours after ingestion of contaminated food or water. Salmonella gastroenteritis is usually a self-limited disease in the normal healthy individual. Patients at risk for more severe illness include neonates, infants, adults greater than 65 years, patients with impaired immunity or immunosuppressing treatments. In these rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and septic arthritis.

My mother used to work with a Chinese guy and he would grow sprouts in his bathtub and sell them to local businesses . My mother never ate another sprout the rest of he life .
A guy tried to get me to invest in a sprout outfit.
I passed because it struck me as an inherently dirty process if brought up to scale.
Not sure if there is a safe way to grow them industrially.
Remember those “balloons” Byedone allowed China to float all across the country? And all the land China has bought up around our farms and military bases? Is it possible (probable?) these things are connected?
E.coli can survive in soil for months to years, depending on environmental conditions, while Listeria monocytogenes is known for its ability to persist in a wide range of conditions, including soil, for weeks to months.
Sprouts are easy to grow in jars right by the kitchen sink and it is something that every prepper should know and be ready to do.
It is just seeds in a jar with a screen on top, you put water in the jar and then empty it as the screen keeps the seeds from pouring out with the rinse water, do that for 3 or 4 days and you have fresh vegetables, you can sprout your wheat kernels, beans, whatever, in a survival situation for some nutrition, even if you live in a highrise.
Only affects Vegans and they won’t notice E-Coli, given all the other crap they eat.
(ok, maybe a few others...)
Easy to grow, hard to keep fresh.
What about irradiation for sprouts?
I don’t eat them. I used to. I don’t eat off salad bars either. Both for the same reason...............
Like growing radishes on the window sill, you have a jar of sprouts coming ready every other day, when you grow radishes in your kitchen you plant a few seeds today, and then a few seeds a few days later, and so on for a constant supply of a few fresh radishes.
Seems to me that this is deja vu all over again.
Yes, Yogi, it does..................
FDA 2025 Inspection Warning Letter
Dear Ms. Mann:
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) inspected your sprouting operation, located at 2751 Minnehaha Ave., Minneapolis, MN 55406-1546 on October 30, 2024, through November 14, 2024. The inspection revealed serious violations of the Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption regulation (Produce Safety Regulation or PSR), Title 21, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 112 (21 CFR Part 112).
Based on our inspectional findings, we have determined that your mung bean, soybean, and green sprout products are adulterated within the meaning of section 402(a)(4) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (the Act) [21 U.S.C. § 342(a)(4)], in that they have been prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions whereby they may have become contaminated with filth, or whereby they may have been rendered injurious to heath. In addition, failure to comply with the PSR is a prohibited act under section 301(vv) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 331(vv)]. You can find the Act and FDA regulations through links on FDA's home page at www.fda.gov.
At the conclusion of the inspection on November 14, 2024, our investigator provided you with a Form FDA 483, Inspectional Observations (FDA 483). We received your written responses dated December 5, 2024, and December 6, 2024, which describe your completed and planned corrective actions to the Form FDA 483. We address your responses below. ...
I suppose it could work in theory.
But the main problem is everything is wet and workers are morons.
I’m guessing that the majority of sprout eaters are sensitive to health news and the market could turn against sprouts if these kind of stories take hold, that same market of buyers also tends to be hostile to irradiation.
It will be interesting to see if this anti-sprout, anti-lettuce talk takes hold.
sprouts should not be eaten
Sprouts are one of the most valuable, nutritious things preppers can store. You just have to sprout them yourself and sterilize the seeds before starting.
My family had a sprout business. We grew them in drums that constantly slowly rotated. when they were ready they went into a stainless bubbling tank full of water and some chlorine to clean the hulls off, then spun dry and packed in 4oz or 1# bags. Very clean operation.
I hate alfalfa sprouts. We started selling radish sprouts which I liked, but they never took off.
The competition just puts seen in a plastic tub a grows them and then sells them still in the tub with the hulls still on.
