Mother of Navy Sailor Tells NYT ‘They Didn’t Sign Up to Be on a Ship in the Middle of the Ocean’

VIDEOS AT LINK...............

This is how a narrative is built. As Twitchy reported, the wife of a U.S. Navy sailor who allegedly tried to jump overboard somehow came into contact with Natalie Oliverio, a reporter with The Military Times (which is not officially affiliated with the U.S. military). Oliverio published a piece that made it sound like sailors were jumping from the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, port and starboard. The ship's deployment was supposed to end in May, and The Military Times made it sound like the extra three months had many sailors attempting suicide.

CNN's Erin Burnett picked up the story and amplified it, interviewing a sailor's wife. "Multiple U.S. sailors have reportedly tried to jump overboard the USS Abraham Lincoln amid poor conditions as the Iran war extends their deployment," Burnett posted to X along with the video clip. How many is "multiple"? The Military Times story gave two anecdotes.

Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao put out a statement indicating that "a small number of mental health cases were treated with no loss of life" during the ship's 266-day deployment. Sounds pretty standard among a crew of 5,000.

The New York Times is reporting on Thursday that the Abraham Lincoln headed home to California.

A day earlier, The New York Times had put together a video of a conversation with a family member of a sailor stationed on the Abraham Lincoln.

To be fair, she follows that up with "no port calls, no feet on the ground." You'll never believe that, in the full video, The Times reports that Erika Vandermeer second-guessed her support for President Trump when the Iran War kicked off.

Understandably, family members of any U.S. service member deployed would be concerned about them. But for one or two attempted suicides to have blown up into a weeks-long media narrative involving CNN and The New York Times is ridiculous. It's a transparent attempt to reduce morale among the public.

Kind of makes sense - it’s not like the Navy advertises being stuck out in the middle of the ocean.

See, I did join the army, but I joined a different army. I joined the one with the condos and the private rooms. I mean look at this place. The army couldn't afford drapes? I'll be up at the crack of dawn here!

Watkins I’d like to leave the army please, sir.
Colonel Good heavens man, why?
Watkins It’s dangerous.
Colonel What?
Watkins There are people with guns out there, sir.
Colonel What?
Watkins Real guns, sir. Not toy ones, sir. Proper ones, sir. They’ve all got ‘em. All of ‘em, sir. And some of ‘em have got tanks.
Colonel Watkins, they are on our side.
Watkins And grenades, sir. And machine guns, sir. So I’d like to leave, sir, before I get killed, please.
Colonel Watkins, you’ve only been in the army a day.
Watkins I know sir but people get killed, properly dead, sir, no barley cross fingers, sir. A bloke was telling me, if you’re in the army and there’s a war you have to go and fight.
Colonel That’s true.
Watkins Well I mean, blimey, I mean if it was a big war somebody could be hurt.
Colonel Watkins why did you join the army?
Watkins For the water-skiing and for the travel, sir. And not for the killing, sir. I asked them to put it on my form, sir - no killing.
Colonel Watkins are you a pacifist?
Watkins No sir, I’m not a pacifist, sir. I’m a coward.

Not The Bee.....SMH

Although I’ve heard it before over here.

Back when desert storm was ramping up a lot of sailors were being deployed out of NAS Jax.

A local tv station was interviewing some of them on base about how they felt about it.

One sailor said he enlisted to go to college not be deployed on a ship.

Unbelievable

Yes, Yes they very much did.

Old sub sailor here, 7 patrols and one was 88 days underwater. I have absolutely 0 sympathy.

Once we had aguy lose it and tried to open a hatch when submerged. Not possible of course bit that earned him a straitjacket and immediate extraction, lucky he did not suffer crew justice for such idiocy.

“Makes sense”? When someone enlists in the Navy, they know full well that in most cases they will be assigned to an ocean going vessel not shore duty. Fed up with these cry babies complaining about their lives on board. They have TV, movies, great food, phones, video games, romantic interests, etc. Certainly not your daddy’s navy.

And that was almost certainly an attack boat. Now someone ask a boomer guy the average time underwater on a cruise.

That was a good movie....

The mother who was quoted in the story is a wee bit short on logic, isn’t she? The RECRUITS don’t get to set the rules for their time in the military. Her son ought to be able to set her straight as he’ll know the score.

I recently read “Where Away” and keep thinking about it because of these articles.

Where Away is a story of an American ship torn apart in a battle with the Japanese but somehow staying afloat and steering with its engines since the rudder was broken and fixed in a terrible position, the next couple of months of fleeing and surviving is a sort of horror story as far as conditions on board, they even had to abandon wounded back in Java, the japs thought they had sunk and it was a long complex, high tension journey with even painted canvas and concrete to simulate repairs and even crew losses during the escape as makeshift repairs were attempted, and the guys were magnificent and creative, and hungry, since so many important parts of the ship were destroyed and flooded.

“Where Away is the remarkable account of the USS Marblehead and its epic, 16,000-mile odyssey from a battle in the Far East back to American shores.”
