The West’s selective hatred of Israel says less about Israel than it does about the values—and prejudices—of those who condemn it.
Hamas or Israeli Values?
Israel dominates the daily news in this 2026 midterm election year—almost always in a boring, fatiguing, negative light. Tens of thousands of innocents may be slaughtered, ethnically cleansed, butchered, and tortured by the world’s dictators, yet an overwhelming and obsessive abhorrence is reserved for tiny, democratic Israel.
Such perverse asymmetry is strange, since, at least privately, most Americans would concede that of the 18 Middle Eastern nations, only Israel is a genuine consensual democracy.
As far as tolerance goes, in the entire region, only in Israel is it legal to criticize political or religious figures. Only there can one choose to adopt an openly gay or trans lifestyle. Only there can an apostate renounce one’s religion or urge others to do the same. And only there can Christians establish a new church almost anywhere they choose.
Some of Israel’s fiercest feminist critics who wear miniskirts and halter tops, some of its most severe gay opponents, and some of its more virulent trans adversaries would in all likelihood be summarily arrested in most Middle Eastern countries if they dared to speak, act, or wear clothes as they do in the West—except, of course, in democratic and free Israel.
In terms of protest, scream publicly in Tel Aviv, “I no longer believe in the Jewish faith, and I hate the current government of Israel”—and there is little chance of being arrested.
Chant the same publicly in any Muslim country in the Middle East—“I no longer believe in Islam, and I hate our current government”—and the loud critic would be either jailed or beaten by a street mob or worse.
The New, Old Hatred
On the Left—whether that is defined

Q for the professor: If one despises Israel’s Deep State, does that make one an anti-Semite?
Just curious.
How do they even justify having a moral code to begin with? Don't they claim to be scientific materialists?
“The West’s selective hatred of Israel” coupled with the West’s love of Islam is a deadly cocktail.
The Leftists in the West love Islam because the Leftists see how the Islam leaders in Islam countries are able to keep their citizens under total control.
Leftists like Total Control and Islamists like Total Control.
Thus, we have a have a ‘Match Made In Hell’.
What rock did you crawl out from under? All Arabs in "Israel proper" are full and equal citizens with equal rights, their own political parties, and members in the Keneset.
I don't recall any right wing Catholics complaining about South Africa or Rhodesia (not that they weren't far preferable to what succeeded them).
Israel is a gay destination-——gay-friendly in large areas like Tel Aviv and Haifa. Tel Aviv features vibrant gay pride events, prominent community centers, and high social visibility.
Having no Christian values, Israel’s Anti-discrimination laws protect gay individuals in employment.
LGBTQ+ people serve openly in the military and government.
Foreign same-sex marriages are legally recognized by the Israeli state.
All unfortunately true, because the current state is a typical western, secular, "democratic" one. However, as you somehow seem to have forgotten, the exact same policy is to be found now in most countries in the world. Should the nations of Europe cease to exist because of these deplorable policies? No? Only the "serpent race?"
The ban on homosexuality does not come from "chrstian values." It comes from Jewish Law, which predated chrstianity by a thousand years, and Noahide Law, which has existed since Adam and Eve (not that you believe in Adam and Eve).
I don't post this to change your mind, which is clearly impossible, but to place these facts before other readers.
Does your "bible" even have an "old testament" in it?
Exactly.
Israel likes to pretend it is a democracy to get US foreign aid tax dollars, but the Jewish religion plays a prominent formal role in its public and legal life and in its government.
The United States is an "authentic democracy?" I thought it was a "Constitutional Republic?"
Yes, the Orthodox rabbinate has prerogatives in Israel, but I can assure you it does not approve all this "gay rights" nonsense, which comes from Israel's secular, western, and "authentic democratic" antecedents.
Ancient Israel was not a democracy, but a Theocracy, as it will be again (and the sooner the better). In fact, the whole world will eventually be a Theocracy. Isn't that what the Eschaton is all about?
And why do you identify Israel's Deep State solely with the Right? Why not with the Left Wing, as everywhere else?
Why in the world would anyone believe the international Left is secretly run by the Israeli Right?
“”I don’t post this to change your mind, which is clearly impossible, but to place these facts before other readers.

Nice try... to reason with another “unreasonable” Israel-hater. I fear that in Liz’s case... it’s a waste of time and effort. But pointing out her/their biased BS is always the thing to do, so good job. And no, I’m betting that Liz is anything “but” a Christian.... so no old testament and no new testament, either.
But half of the Arabs under Israeli control are not citizens. As for those who are, the Jewish parties have an unspoken agreement that they will not rely on the Arabs in parliament for a majority to form a government. They are thus blocked from any real influence in the government. Let’s not pretend that even the Israeli Arabs enjoy equal rights with Jews.
See my post #30.
See my post 18. Israeli muslim Arabs and Christians and Hindus and... have full and equal rights with Israeli Jews. And, yes, noncitizens do not have the same rights are citizens. This is the case in every nation in the world. Sorry to dispel your fantasy.
Most people HERE know Islam lies, but lots of useful idiots don’t.
“Are citizens” should be “as citizens”
But other nations do not insist on exercising sovereignty over non-citizen populations. If Israel truly wishes to be a democracy it must either grant the Palestinian Arabs full citizenship or give them their freedom and withdraw from the territories. The present arrangement, one that has persisted for over 50 years, make a mockery of democracy.
Excellent post.
The pro Israel folks seem to always overplay their hand.
It creates new defectors to their opposition.
The name calling is a bridge too far.
I used to wonder how the Nazis got so many people to hate the Jews. It seems that all they had to do was to have state media tell the people to hate the Jews, and they hated the Jews.
VDH is an amazing beacon of knowledge and good sense and moral values for years and years.
One of the best, perhaps the very very very best commentator we have in America today. IMHO.
**Let’s not pretend that even the Israeli Arabs enjoy equal rights with Jews.**
People are either unaware of or choose to gloss over the Nation State Law passed in Israel in July 2028. It is now the defining definition of the State of Israel in the Basic Law (the closest thing to a constitution in Israel). Notably, the new law does not include guarantees and protections for minority, non-Jewish rights:
Basic Law: Israel as the Nation State of the Jewish People
1 — Basic principles
A. The land of Israel is the historical homeland of the Jewish people, in which the State of Israel was established.
B. The State of Israel is the national home of the Jewish people, in which it fulfills its natural, cultural, religious and historical right to self-determination.
C. The right to exercise national self-determination in the State of Israel is unique to the Jewish people.

The Prime Minster’s reaction:
“We enshrined in law the basic principle of our existence,” said Netanyahu. “This is our state — the Jewish state. In recent years there have been some who have attempted to put this in doubt, to undercut the core of our being. Today we made it law: This is our nation, language and flag.”
The Joint Arab List:
The most withering criticism came from the Joint (Arab) List, which called the law “anti-democratic, colonialist, racist and with clear characteristics of apartheid.”
“The law has no mention of the word democracy or the word equality, and is wholly committed to brutish emphasis of ethnic supremacy, leaving no doubt that there are two types of citizenship — first-rate ones for Jews and second-rate ones for Arabs,” it said.
“” only in Israel is it legal to criticize political or religious figures “”
Ironic because in Western nations, it’s becoming illegal to criticize Israel and/or Jews.
