The Vera C. Rubin Observatory is a major astronomical facility located on Cerro Pachรณn in Chile, jointly funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy. It is named after astronomer Vera Rubin, who provided the first convincing evidence for the existence of dark matter.

Key operational milestones include:

First Light: Achieved in June 2025, with the release of the first images revealing billions of stars, galaxies, and thousands of previously unseen asteroids.

Full Survey Operations: The Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) officially began in July 2026 and will run for ten years.

The observatory features an 8.4-meter telescope equipped with the worldโ€™s largest digital camera (3,200 megapixels). It captures images of the southern sky every 40 seconds, generating approximately 20 terabytes of data nightly to create a comprehensive, time-lapse record of the universe. Its primary scientific goals are probing dark energy and dark matter, cataloging the solar system (including the potential discovery of Planet Nine), exploring transient events, and mapping the Milky Way.

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory is in the early stages of its ten-year mission, having officially begun full survey operations in July 2026 (specifically June 30, 2026).

Prior to full operations, the observatory captured its first images during test runs in June 2025, which included a composite of 678 images taken over seven hours and a video combining 1,100 images.

During its full survey, the telescope is designed to capture approximately 1,000 images per night, with each image covering an area as large as 45 full moons. Over the course of the decade-long survey, it is expected to generate more than 2 million images and produce 500 petabytes of data.

I was about to argue with you until I read it again. Oh, “clickbait TITLES” ! I need new glasses. I misread the “L” as, um, another letter.

Well, I must use the exact heading that is used. Thus, I might agree with you, but even Taylor Swift doesn’t break the internet. My service has occasionally stopped the internet for methough, but for others the internet is still available. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿค™

It seems like something “breaks the Internet” two or three times a week. Who fixes it up again?

I told you that it is 30 minutes & 30 seconds. Oviously it never broke the internet, however, we are required to post the exact heading provided.

But I suggest you don't watch it,, because you read heading, and then comment. This is not for those who have quick reactions, while not reading what was made available.

But thanks for your enlightening comment. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿค™

However, if you wish to know about a nrew observatory that took over 20 years to develop, and captures images of space every 40 seconds, nd then reports things that have changed, events that are happening in realtime, you might find it rather interesting.

Then why do they have an astronomy category, and I have seen many artucles that deal with astronomy news, and this is news about the new observatory consruucted in Chile by the U.S. on a 10 year mission where pictures are capture every 40 seconds.

'Before I tell you what you came here to learn, let me bore you for 20 mins.'

Another 20 min video that could have been over in one.
