WASHINGTON — The Kennedy Center’s board moved Thursday to rename the area around the iconic performing arts center the “President Donald J. Trump Plaza” and to add Trump’s name back onto the building’s facade — after a federal judge ordered its removal.
Trump’s allies on the board pushed through the changes during a meeting that lasted more than two hours, after Democrats including Rhode Island Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse and Ohio Rep. Joyce Beatty objected to Trump’s plans to renovate and rebrand the aging facility.
Trump, who chairs the board, participated virtually in part of the meeting and pushed back on criticism of his plans to pour $250 million into refreshing the center, which opened in 1971. The refresh will require the main building’s closure for about two years.
In a twist, the board’s latest plan calls for Trump’s name to appear beneath the longtime signage on the cavernous main hall, to read: “Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump.”
The board voted last December to rebrand it as the “Trump Kennedy Center,” but the change was nixed by US District Judge Christopher Cooper, who ordered the current president’s name removed because it lacked congressional ratification.
Democrats slammed the latest actions.
“This morning’s decision to close the Center and the surprise agenda item to put Donald Trump’s name back on the building was more of the same,” Beatty said in a statement. “This latest development is a transparent effort to circumvent the Court’s ruling, and flies in the face of the statutes that Congress passed.”
Paolo Zampolli, a presidential appointee to the board, fired back at critics, urging Trump’s name to be inscribed in large letters and ridiculing opposition to the temporary closure as willfully ignorant of necessary repairs and improvements.

I don’t understand the issue.
Renamimg things that have been named for decades seems silly; like renaming military bases, or tearing down monuments.
What’s that again? I’m gettin’ a little dizzy.
No sooner do the fluttering flames of Liberal fury finally cool down, surrounding the name change, that this same Kennedy Ctr. board decides to scotch tape the president’s name right back onto the building outside. Round 2, coming soon!
This is an unnecessary swift kick to that same Hornet’s Nest as a few months ago. Doesn’t that board of directors have anything better to do than to keep stirring the pots of provocation? Yes, it’s amusing to see Libs all upset over something petty again, but what do we really get out of poking them in the eye again? Not much.
Do it just to do it. They fight dirty. No reason why we can’t be petty. It will only anger those that despise us.

Trump is ridiculous. With all the problems we have in this country that need solving, putting his name on the Kennedy Center is not one of them. Trump seems to have forgotten that great men have others name things after them, they don’t name things after themselves.
There will be no money for repairs. So no Trump name, no renovation. Tough crap.

A fancy, marble sign in the middle of the “plaza” would be more fitting if they are going to do this rather than putting the name on the Center itself, which is not the “plaza.”
Because an act of Congress in the 1960s not only named the Kennedy Center but designated it a living memorial the JFK—like the Washington Monument. That is what the lawsuit is about.
Trust me, they are already dangerously angry.
Why didn’t they build Kennedy an arch or tower? A building and tower. A theater with just Liberal Democrats acts and performers is not a worthy monument.
It wasn’t built to be a monument to JFK as he was alive during the planning after he was assassinated. It is a living memorial per Congress’s vote years ago. I seriously doubt anyone knew it would be a Liberal playground when Congress voted.
The Democrats let their hallowed Kennedy Center turn into a dump through decades of neglect. Now Trump is doing the necessary renovations and of course they hate him for it. He’s needling them for their hypocrisy with the name change shenanigans. It’s a form of mockery which they deserve. It’s a bit petty but he’s doing it to make a bigger point.
