Luigi Mangione is expected to plead guilty Friday in his federal case tied to his alleged execution of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson — in an apparent bid to dodge a life sentence, sources confirmed to the Post.
The 28-year-old accused killer — who is set to appear at a morning hearing in Manhattan federal court — is charged in the federal case with two counts of stalking resulting in death stemming from his alleged December 2024 cold-blooded murder of the powerful executive on a Manhattan sidewalk.
Mangione would still likely face a potential life sentence if he were to plead guilty in federal court, but would hope that US District Judge Margaret Garnett doles out a lesser sentence, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The sources cautioned that Mangione could still decide against copping the plea at any moment before or even during Friday’s court appearance.
Such a deal could end up crippling a separate state case — where a trial is set to start on Sept. 8 — because of New York’s rules against double jeopardy, or being tried twice for the same crime.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office — which has claimed “primary jurisdiction” in the case because it charged Mangione with the murder first — could also still push to take Mangione to trial if it disapproves of the terms of any plea deal.
The preppy University of Pennsylvania grad is charged in the federal case with two counts of stalking resulting in death. Two other counts, including a death-penalty-eligible count of murder through use of a firearm, were tossed, with a judge citing “legal infirmities.”

No plea bargaining!! Instead, trial, conviction and life sentence to the deepest darkest prison cell that can be found.
Let him live long enough to forget what the sun and moon look like.
Clearly premeditated murder, and he will only get 25 years, talk about a failed justice system.
I know plea bargains are sometimes a necessary evil, but if he gets less than 50 years it’s take up arms for war.

Male life expectancy in the U.S. is currently 76.5 years, so I’d be fine with a sentence reduced to 75, no parole.
Can’t have a trial that might expose an organized crime link.

Federal and state charges are separate. I don’t agree with this kind of double prosecution that goes on these days, but the judge throughout federal murder charges so how could a state murder charge possibly be double Jeopardy?
When a pearl clutching Leslie Stahl type interviews the captured perp, the perp calmly says: "Just doing the job the government is supposed to be doing for the people it claims to represent. Instead, by its actions, the government is condoning the behavior of the Mangiones of the world, so long as those condoning his behavior themselves aren't threatened. Which means there is very little daylight between Mangione and the people who let him off."
What organization do you suspect? He is 3rd-generation American from a long-respected Maryland family. His uncle is a legislator, who also owns the Baltimore area conservative radio station that carried Rush Limbaugh and his successor. Another part of the Maryland Mangione clan operates a chain of well-regarded assisted living residences. This is a terrible dishonor and heartbreak for them. You wouldn't be stereotyping an Italian name, would you?
“A judge”—very interesting wording there—tossed the death penalty-eligible charge due to “legal infirmities”. Are they f’n kidding? Who is the numb-nuts prosecutor in this case? The CEO was shot to death. No identification of this so-called “judge” has been provided. Don’t forget Mangione’s family has very deep pockets. And the New York City court system is a festering sewer. The fix, as they say, was in.
Or somebody high on the political spectrum. Which is really organized crime when you think of it.
Judge: “You’ve pled guilty, the sentence is....death.”
Maybe he’s hoping for a pardon from President AOC.
His entire defense is a plea for jury nullification. Unfortunately, he could get it from a NY jury.
IMHO, life in prison is too good for him, but it is the most he could get if it goes to trial. I just hope that no plea deal lets him walk in the next 20 years.
There is no question that a trial and conviction first in state court would not prevent a subsequent trial and conviction in federal court. I don't know if the reverse is true, particularly in NY. NY could have a constitutional prohibition against double jeopardy that is substantially more restrictive than the U.S. Constitutional prohibition.
