A Texas high school teacher was reduced to tears and broke down in front of his class when he realized the seniors he was teaching couldn’t complete a writing exercise.
Darius Williams, a teacher for Houston Independent School District’s Wheatley High School, said he couldn’t get through the first class of the second day of school before his students’ poor literacy skills were too much for him.
“I just finished a three-hour class, and I literally broke down in the middle of class,” Williams said in an Instagram video during his lunch break on Tuesday. Williams, a New Education System (NES) Career and Technical Education (CTE) staffer, said he gave his class full of seniors two paragraphs to read and asked them to complete another sentence he had practically filled out for them, but was left stunned when they couldn’t finish the task.
“I basically completed the sentence for them, he said. “These are 17- and 18-year-old kids, and they couldn’t fill in four words. Four words!” exclaimed Williams.
“I gave them the scenario, we annotated together. I gave them the answers before we even had the problem and they couldn’t do it. I don’t know I simply don’t know where the problem is,” he said frustratingly.
“This is only day two, and I have seniors who simply cannot read and seniors who cannot write. They cannot write,” Williams cried out.
“Our young black men, our young brown men, our young black girls, and our young brown girls,” Williams said as he began to sob before ending the video.

Half a century or more ago, all that was taught in first and second grade was reading and writing and a tiny bit of math. People also learned to read printing and write in cursive at the same time. There was no emphasis on “content” which is now propaganda.
Great post. You identified a massive problems. Teachers had genuine authority in class and students were basically powerless. Repurcussions were immediate and ran from stern to severe.
These days, too often the students are running the show with the teachers in fear of stepping out of line rather than the children in fear of stepping out of line.
You go to any good school and there are few to no discipline problems and the children know the teacher is the authority with the threat of some form of unwanted discipline for acting out.
In these heavily black schools, it is if the teachers are emasculated and the students run the show. Teachers can’t teach under those circumstances.

But ... it still starts at home. Whether it’s reading or instilling proper values. Parents are failing their kids when they depend on the schools for everything.

I was talking about reading in the United States, level that has dropped about 40 percent in twenty years. Not all of this is due to low IQ kids who never read anyway.
Reading scores have been in the decline since 1964, the high water year for scores in the United States (public schools).
This is not due to low IQ kids. It is due to leftists in all fifty states screwing up the teaching methods. It is due to Federal and State laws and judicial rulings.
The teachers’ unions are demonic.
Anyone over forty-five would be shocked. I have relatives who teach.
It’s hard to believe this occurred to him the first time in August 2026. He’s on the inside; he’s been aware for years. Still, it is a powerful video.
A 2019 report from EdBuild, which promotes equity in public schools, found majority non-White school districts in the US get $23 billion less than districts that mostly serve White students. Minority enrollment in Hartford’s public schools was at about 90% during the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 school years.This paragraph illustrates the problem of schools being dependent on property taxes for their funding. If her school is 90% minority, that indicates it is also in a largely minority community, presumably with lower real estate values, resulting in less money for schools.
Localities have tried to address this problem with busing and with county, state or Federal grants to impoverished areas. But the ethos of the community may also play a part. Affirmative Action and DEI teacher training isn't helping, especially when minority communities demand teachers who "look like us" and openly disparage the legacy white culture. Do these families read to their children before bedtime, or sit with them over homework? It may not have been part of the culture.
This is a sad situation because all minorities want equality, but it can't be conferred without the work to excel, or at least to be average. Even Ben Carson revealed that he hadn't known that his mother couldn't read when he was young, but that she made a show of looking over his homework and encouraging him always to do better. And he did! One-on-one oarental involvement in their child's learning is critical to success in school. Pride and unfounded entitlement stand in the way of learning for too many people.

There is a recent high-school graduate in Washington state that is suing because she can only read and write at a 3rd grade level or something. And she passed all of her grade levels and graduated.
She is white.
While the schools obviously have a responsibility, the parents are also responsible to make sure the kids’ take school seriously, do their homework, and start reading with their kids early on before they even get to school.
I taught financial accounting at a large state university for 35 years. Each year on day one, I asked students to calculate 38 percent of 100. In my last 5 years, 2010-2015, fewer than half of the students could answer that question, with or without a calculator.
They had no concept of percent, fractions or decimal placement. For most, the number 1,000 and 100,000 were functionally the same.
They weren’t stupid. I was able to teach them the concepts of assets, liabilities and capital plus the rules of debit and credit. I could not, however, make up for the 12 years of math concepts that they never learned. Without those concepts, analysis of financial statements is impossible.

There's your problem, and the fundamental problem with structuring formal education by "grades"
Consider the "First Grade" class at your local government (or parochial) elementary school. Half of those kids are below average. What are you going to do with the kids on the right-hand side of the gaussian distribution while you're struggling to teach the left-siders reading, writing, and ciphering? You better come up with something good ... and quick.
I can guarantee you, from personal experience: If you hold those right-side kids back, they will get bored ... and restless ... and creative. And some of them are smarter than you.
The whole concept really doesn't work. Grouping the smart kids, the average kids, and the dumb kids together ... and advancing none of them until the dumbest kids finally at long bloody last make the grade ... is a recipe for disaster.
The nfl and nba are full of that level of education.....many actually have college diplomas.
Around 2015 we gotta new admin assistant in my office fresh out of Clemson.
After I got to know her she mentioned she had been a tutor for football players in college....half kidding because I had a good idea of the answer I asked her how much work she did for the athletes.
Stone face serious she said “make no mistake, the tutors do ALL OF IT”.
Because there is so much money involved it has been common practice for a very long time to pass athletes that make millions for the schools in any way possible.
The real victim? The athletes themselves.
ALL our sixth graders—let alone high school seniors—MUST be able to read, write, and figure!
Ban the cellphones, and concentrate on the three Rs! Then go on to science, advanced math, history, civics, etc.!
