The same goes for ghosts and ghouls, though I have to admit that the difference between the latter pair is significantly gorier.
And since we’re on the subject of spooky, not-quite synonyms, I wondered – wait, are cemeteries the same thing as graveyards?
Apparently, not, it seems. Though both refer to burial sites for the dead, they are actually distinct (I had no idea).
What’s the difference between a cemetery and a graveyard? According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary’s site, it has to do with size, (sometimes) place, and figurative use of the words.
A graveyard, they say, usually refers to a “small cemetery, such as one situated next to a church”.
And “graveyard” is more often used “figuratively to refer to places where things are left or thrown away” – maybe your junk drawer is a “broken phone graveyard,” but not a “phone cemetery,” for instance.
A graveyard is a type of cemetery, but a cemetery is not necessarily a graveyard.

Make no bones about it.
A friend worked for the city of Houghton while going to college at Michigan Tech. Part of it was digging graves with a machine at the municipal cemetery. When the machine was out of service periodically, they dug the graves by hand and lowered the stiffs in. Yes, they referred to them as stiffs.
The workers lived pretty well, off the books. They traded jewelry and gold teeth for cash and drank it away. I think some of the drinking was to dull the shame from robbing the dead of family jewelry.
Speaking of cemeteries and graveyards, Reggie Bannister died.
I liked him in the Phantasm movies.

I want a casket, not a coffin. Coffins look like they would be too big for me.
When my dad retired from the Army he drove the meat wagon for the Wayne County Medical Examiner (Detroit morgue) and had additional classifications, bodies from the river were Floaters and decomposing ones were Stinkers.
A town drunk hears strange noises from Mozart’s grave, fetches a priest and a magistrate, who realizes they are hearing Mozart’s symphonies playing backwards—the 9th, then the 8th, then the 7th. The magistrate reassures everyone: “Nothing to worry about. It’s just Mozart decomposing!”

When I see a particularly large cemetery I like to comment,”A lot of dead people livin’ there.”
My uncle used that old dad joke for years when he passed a local cemetery.
We just buried him there last weekend.

Thank you for that humor. I’m a bit of a movie fanatic. I try to watch one at least, every night before bed. Tonight I”m watching ‘Count Yorga, Vampire’ for free on TUBI tv channel streaming. Uncut with some ads. The sequel is also on TUBI tv. ‘The Return of Count Yorga’.
A couple of my favorite films from very early ‘70s. I think Robert Quarry’s interpretation of Count Yorga is the most compelling and interesting film version of a vampire character. Highly recommend both free, uncut films.
I have to admit I’ve dug one grave and interred one coffin in my working days. But I worked for the city as a groundskeeper and it was a city run cemetery. Poor woman had died and had no family left to give her a funeral, so...
