Never Underestimate The Impact of Free Republic
Free Republic | Bill Russell

Posted on 08/07/2026 2:50:49 AM PDT by Bill Russell

Yesterday, the President signed new Executive Orders expanding the definition of who is excluded from Birthright Citizenship. While there is an absolute likelihood that all those really smart attorneys and other people in the Executive branch came up with the updated policies independent of anything I floated here, in the blogosphere, and through indirect channels, I will take it as a win. Even if independently arrived at by others, the ideas floated here definitely appear to have been ground into the sausage making process of the new policies.

Never underestimate the impact of Free Republic on national debates! -- Back in 2008, when I was a completely unknown congressional candidate running against one of the most corrupt and powerful congressmen in US history and did not even know what FreeRepublic was, it was a Freeper (Hope you are still out there and in good health, Rusty!) who elevated my campaign on this forum and got the attention of Michelle Malkin and other members of the national press, enabling my campaign to give John Murtha a run for his money. With that history in mind, here are the links to the original article on July 19, 2026, and the new Birthright Citizenship Executive Orders:

“”Other than the late Linda Graham, has there been a single member of Congress who has come out and publicly supported this stupid military campaign since February?
I can’t think of any, though I’m not on top of all the media reporting on any given day.””

***

To my knowledge, there has not been a Congressional “poll” taken asking who is for or anti-Trump’s agenda, including the Iran war. But then, Congress is historically pretty feckless when it comes to certain things... so I wouldn’t bet the farm that any poll would favor Trump’s war initiative right about now.

Trump’s not stupid. He knows or knew that this Iran war was not going to be popular, not even among his own supporters. One would think that Trump would at least get some credit from his detractors for not being a ‘finger in the wind’ feckless ‘you know what’ by doing what he has done and is doing... ie by doing what has to be done, finally, with Iran. But nooooo...

no credit given to orange man bad any time, any place, for any thing.

The state of war between Iran and the United States has been characterized by hostility and conflict since the 1979 Iranian Revolution, which led to the severing of diplomatic relations and ongoing tensions, including military confrontations and proxy conflicts. The situation escalated significantly with the 2026 conflict, marked by direct military actions between the two nations.

“we have a President who wants a full and final resolution”

I want to win the Powerball lottery.

A goal that cannot be and/or is not being achieved is not inspiring, it is demoralizing.

Not to marginalize it’s potential for good but...Is there anything that FR has done for the Trump administration(s) that it couldn’t do for itself?

A lot of serious connections with the 45/47 administrations are made through FR that the doers and the recipients have no inclination to make public, boast about, or take credit for. This is not the Oprah show.

That’s complicated to read, betazoid, even for folks who know how to do it.

To make a hotlink, just post the URLs without any other http coding in the post (i.e. no paragraph breaks or italics), and they will automatically become hot links.

Does anyone have a link to that infamous thread?

I don't; but I do know that the definition of “infamous” is negative, wicked or evil. Plain ol’ “famous” is what you wanted to say there.

"People who use that expression must not have sisters, mothers, daughters, children.... etc."

And this is a nonsensical appeal to emotion.

Oh, right. Because “sisters, mothers, daughters, and children” are just expendable.

The thread was anything but negative, wicked or evil... except that it was negative for the lying left. It was spectacular. But ok. I’ll concede your point that I used the wrong term. Thanks.

my favorite from the 90’s was alamo girl.

I could be wrong, but I think I've seen that name posted occasionally in “The Week in Pictures” threads on the Powerline Blog.

I wonder how many current readers of free republic were around when Buckhead noted Rather’s deception?

I remember it well. That was a proud FR experience. Kudos to Buckhead, wherever he is. Long may he wave.

The Congressional "poll" was taken back in late March, when the Trump administration floated the idea of a $200 billion special appropriation to fund the war and was soundly rejected.

The reasons for this were obvious, and some of these Republican members of Congress weren't shy about making their opposition public:

"The justifications presented to the American public for the war in Iran were not the same military objectives we were briefed on today in the House Armed Services Committee. This gap is deeply troubling. The longer this war continues, the faster it will lose the support of Congress and the American people."

maybe. I don’t look at powerline. her handle at free republic used to have extensive files on the debris field of people in Clinton’s wake who died of various causes including arkanside.

Oh, right. Because “sisters, mothers, daughters, and children” are just expendable.

Are you daft?

Pretending that there aren't people who oppose the Iran War because of the economic costs to their "sisters, mothers, daughters, and children" is precisely why I called it a "nonsensical appeal to emotion."

People with families are affected by the economy. If a war that we initiated, and that the general public did not ask for, directly contributes to an economic downturn that harms their daily life, then no one should be shocked if they refer to the Iran War as "stupid."

a large and noisy faction that combines an anti-Vance hatefest with an equally mindless pro-Rubio lovefest, even though Rubio is just Lindsey Graham or John McCain in a slicker (though much less intelligent) package.

Re your opinion that Rubio is less intelligent than McCain—would you please provide more evidence why you believe that?
