Strange quantum experiment shows “negative time” is more than an illusion

Photons traveling through a cloud of atoms can emerge so early that they appear to have spent a negative amount of time inside. Researchers tested whether this was merely a misleading feature of the light pulse by making extremely weak measurements of the atoms. Surprisingly, the atoms confirmed the same negative dwell time. The finding does not break standard physics, but it reveals that one of quantum mechanics’ strangest effects is physically measurable.

...

Our experiment used photons – quantum particles of light – and the against-the-odds journey they must undertake to pass straight through a cloud of rubidium atoms.

...

Based on the average time when the photon enters the cloud, one can calculate the expected average time it would arrive at the far side of the cloud, assuming it travels at the speed of light (as photons usually do).

What one finds is that the photon actually arrives far earlier than that. In fact, it arrives so early it appears to have spent a negative amount of time inside the cloud – to exit, on average, before it enters.

...

The solution is to make, instead, a very imprecise (but still very accurately calibrated) measurement. That is the price paid to keep the disturbance negligible. Specifically, we fired a weak laser beam – unrelated to the single photon pulse – through the cloud of atoms, and measured small changes in the phase of the beam’s light to probe whether the atoms were excited.

...

Amazingly, the result of this weak measurement of dwell time, when the photon goes straight through the cloud, exactly equals the negative time suggested by the photons’ average arrival time. Prior to our work, no-one suspected that these two times, measured in entirely different ways, would be equal.

Reminds me of a Joke.

Three boys are bragging about how fast their dads are.

The first boy says “my dad is so fast, he can throw a pitch, then run over at catch it before it hits the ground!”

Second boy says “Oh yeah?? My dad is so fast that he can shoot an arrow at a target, then run over and move the target so his shot is a bullseye!”

Third boy laughs and says “that’s nothing....my dad is a Government employee...and he is so fast he works till 5pm but is home by 4:30pm every day!”

I’ll hazard a guess and go with “blasphemy” and “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.”

If thats the case I guess I cant post anything from the great movies of the past like Monty Python...

or modern tv culture...

Ticking away
The moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours
In an offhand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground
In your hometown
Waiting for someone
Or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine
Staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long
And there is time to kill today
And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run
You missed the starting gun

And you run, and you run
To catch up with the sun, but it’s sinking
And racing around
To come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way
But you’re older
Shorter of breath
And one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter
Never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught
Or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation
Is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over
Thought I’d something more to say

Been there heard that a few years ago about a light arriving before it was sent ... is this more BS or is it reproducible?

The biggest challenge to the relativistic understanding of time comes from quantum entanglement, i.e. two particles in opposite spin will reverse their direction relative to one another (i.e. to maintain opposite direction) regardless of their distance of separation, and they do so faster than the speed of light allows. I wonder if “negative time” could shed some light onto this phenomenon as well.

The universe is not only stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine.

Under Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG), the speed of light is predicted to be energy-dependent, meaning it is not a universal constant as in standard General Relativity. Specifically, high-energy (short-wavelength) photons travel slightly slower than low-energy photons due to the discrete, granular structure of spacetime, which causes higher-energy waves to interact more with the underlying “atoms” of space.

Re post 19:

[Someone named]! [Someone named] Doc! You disintegrated Einstein!

See, it was just a matter of time:

A spent SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage slammed into the lunar surface early this morning, and the crater it carved near Einstein Crater will become the first test of a computational model built to predict how hollow human-made objects deform the Moon —

>>>
The stage, catalogued as 2025-010D, struck at approximately 2:35 AM ET (06:35 UTC) on Wednesday, August 5, just as predicted by independent tracker Bill Gray of the Project Pluto tracking network. The impact landed near Einstein Crater on the Moon's western limb at approximately 19.4°N, 93.3°W...

>>>
NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is expected to photograph the fresh crater near Einstein Crater within the coming weeks. LRO imaged the target area before August 5 to establish a baseline; its LROC narrow-angle camera can resolve features as small as 50 centimeters (20 inches). The before-and-after comparison will be published once the post-impact imagery is obtained and processed.

SpaceX Falcon 9 Hits Moon at Dawn: LRO Now Tests Hollow-Body Impact Models

In the Torah, there are a few different words variously translated as falcon.

Usage is scarce, but they all appear in the Torah reading section for the day today:

Chumash Parshat Re'eh, 4th Portion (Devarim (Deuteronomy) 14:1-14:21)

Furthermore, involving "Einstein":

"When wine enters, secrets are revealed". (Eruvin 65a)

Wine [in Hebrew "yayin"] comes from a hidden place; therefore its numerical value is 70, which is the same as the word "secret" [in Hebrew, "sod"]. (Chidushei Aggadah, Sanhedrin)

(LINK)

Einstein:

איינשטיין

א-יינ-שט-יין

I divided the letters to draw out the wine:

יין

Actually two: 🍷 יינ and 🍷 יין

That leaves 'אש ט 🔥

"fire of 9"

Well, the Falcon 9 didn't cause a literal fire, rather some sort of flash presumably, but you get the idea.

It's all in there for the observation. There's always more.

(Who invited *that* kid.)

“All Good Things...” is the acclaimed two-part series finale of Star Trek: The Next Generation (often abbreviated as TNG), airing on May 23, 1994. In the episode, Captain Picard jumps back and forth through past, present, and future timelines to stop an anti-time anomaly instigated by Q.

I really should have pinged you to post 38.

It’s not every day someone breaks down (disintegrates) Einstein, so you might appreciate that.
