Daniel Fernando García Velázquez took the admissions exam for Mexico’s most famous university four times before finally getting the result that should have guaranteed him admission.
On his first three attempts, he had no option other than to travel the 400 km (250 miles) from his native Veracruz to Mexico City to take the test, because the prestigious National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) insisted it had to be taken in person.
On his fourth – and what should have been victorious – attempt this June, he traveled up anyway, even though this time, for the first time in the university’s history, it would be administered online.
This time, Velázquez aced the exam – scoring 94 out of 120 in what should have secured him a spot on the Communication and Journalism degree program offered at UNAM’s Aragón School of Higher Studies.
Yet, despite that result, Velázquez doesn’t know if he will be allowed to attend the new semester that starts on August 10, because UNAM has suspended enrolment while it deals with a scandal over suspected widespread cheating.
UNAM annulled thousands of tests after results showed an unusually high number of perfect scores, suggesting some students cheated either through using artificial intelligence tools or by obtaining the questions in advance. While just around 3,000 of the 150,000 or so tests have been invalidated, all students – including those who, like Velázquez, are not suspected of cheating – have been left in limbo pending the result of UNAM’s investigation into the matter.
Compounding UNAM’s headache is that many of those students who feel unfairly treated are now blaming the AI surveillance system that was supposed to ensure the exam was cheat-proof.

UNAM, Mexico’s most prestigious university, just canceled thousands of exam scores over suspected AI cheating, a scandal that has spread all the way to the country’s president.
UNAM put its entrance exam online for the first time this year, hoping to make it easier for applicants outside Mexico City. More than 158,000 people took it in May and June. The scores that came back didn’t add up.
Here’s what happened:
Between 2021 and 2025, about 3.5% of applicants historically scored 100 or more correct answers.
This year, that rate spiked high enough to trigger a formal review.
UNAM annulled roughly 3,000 of the ~150,000 tests over suspiciously perfect scores.
The university suspended new-student enrollment (the semester starts August 10) while it investigates.
Officials suspect a mix of AI tools like ChatGPT and old-fashioned tricks, like leaked questions.
The exam software, built by Mexican company Territorium Life, was supposed to catch exactly this: it blocked test-takers from opening extra browser tabs and used AI to flag suspicious behavior. Students say the system leaned too hard on AI and not enough on humans watching. Territorium Life maintains its software worked as intended, and argues stopping cheating also requires the university to enforce honesty on its end.
High-stakes testing is moving online everywhere, and AI is increasingly the referee. When that referee can’t reliably tell a cheater from a hard studier, everyone pays for it, including the students who did nothing wrong.
Nobody built a system that can tell the difference between a cheater and someone who just studied hard, and that gap is the actual scandal here. Turns out “trust but verify” gets messy fast when the verifier is an algorithm nobody fully understands.
Since when does scoring 78.33333% mean you “aced the exam”?
If any of the University applicants are the sons or daughters of the Cartels, I would probably lean towards admitting them. Just a thought.
What worries me about kids entering into university now days is how can an honest kid compete against kids that know how to game the system with AI undetected ?
When I sat for the Security+ test, it was during a time when you were required to wear a stupid "COVID" mask. It limited my oxygen and steamed my glasses. I was beyond pissed off, but endured it. I needed the cert for a new contract.

I took proctered exams in my profession over three days in a portion of an arena. Long function tables with 3 people per table. One booklet given out for each exam. One pencil. Proctors walking up and down the aisles. No smoking. Had to sit until time was up and tests collected. Break after each test segment. We all compared notes. Hour lunch break.
Nothing like the adrenaline of that setting to add points to one’s score!

When I got that grade I was embarrassed. It meant I did something dumb.
