A legendary Southern California classic rock station is pulling the plug on its DJs, laying off its entire on-air staff as it flips to a fully automated, music-only format.
KCAL, a longtime staple of the Inland Empire radio dial, announced the sweeping changes will take effect August 1, with parent company Anaheim Broadcasting Corporation promising listeners “nothing but music all day across the Inland Empire.”
Chief Operating Officer Kelly Sanders said the DJ-free format will mean fewer interruptions and more nonstop classic rock, according to a social media announcement.
“KCAL has a longstanding history in the Inland Empire, and this next chapter builds on the station’s strong rock heritage,” Sanders said in a news release, per the Orange County Register.

But whose voice will they use to ruin the intros and outros of great songs with radio station advertisements???
I think that was WLW ... at one time called “the nation station.” Supposedly you could pick it up off wire fences.
That’s it! Huge water cooling pond. Parts of the transmitter are still there.
There was another big station in Schenectady, NY where barbed wire fences would “sing” along. Nearby farmhouses, light bulbs would stay dimly lit, and other weird stuff like that.

I used to listen to that station when I went to college in Riverside back in the mid 80s.
KLOL in Houston had Stevens and Pruitt with co-host Eddie “the Boner” Sanchez. It was hard to be in a bad mood listening to that bunch during morning drive time. They certainly pushed the envelope.

I used to listen to WKRP in Cincinatti with DJ’s Johnny Fever and Venus Flytrap with Les Nessman on News who was a winner of 5 Buckeye Newshawk Awards and the Silver Sow Award and the Copper Cob.
but why now though? you could have done continuous playlists for decades now in theory

I’m in my late 50s. The only time I ever listened to AM in my life was listening to Rush Limbaugh.
Now that he’s gone, nothing compels me to use AM. Too many other options that are far easier to access and not time -dependent.
