A legendary Southern California classic rock station is pulling the plug on its DJs, laying off its entire on-air staff as it flips to a fully automated, music-only format.

KCAL, a longtime staple of the Inland Empire radio dial, announced the sweeping changes will take effect August 1, with parent company Anaheim Broadcasting Corporation promising listeners “nothing but music all day across the Inland Empire.”

Chief Operating Officer Kelly Sanders said the DJ-free format will mean fewer interruptions and more nonstop classic rock, according to a social media announcement.

“KCAL has a longstanding history in the Inland Empire, and this next chapter builds on the station’s strong rock heritage,” Sanders said in a news release, per the Orange County Register.

Running a “classic rock” station is easy. Seems like they have a playlist of about 50 songs on a continuous loop.

Terrestrial radio stations are going the way of the Dodo Bird.

“nothing but music all day across the Inland Empire.”

I seriously doubt that. My guess is all airtime that used to be djs will now be sold for commercials.

Hmm...next step: AI-generated music only. No royalties, no staff, no problems. You could even have an all-robot picket line.

Terrestrial radio and print media are the oil lamp and buggy whip industries of the present day.

AI’s eventually coming for all the “performing arts” as well.

You really don’t need DJs anymore and still have real music. I listen to YouTube music all day long. I choose a Playlist and it plays songs that fit the genre. No advts and no interruptions. It sometimes goes off the rails and I just choose a new Playlist.

I do it this way partly so I can turn off the music when on a phone call.

The other 25 are AC/DC. The same song with 25 different titles.

I was going to say 200. Recently a long time a local DJ qpassed away.

He had a “classic rock” radio spot for at least 40 years. He had probably two dozen or so shows that he played in rotation.

He made a career out it. Same songs over and over .

Radio used to be great, even AM stations. Set it at the lowest volume for a little background. Could listen to it 24/7. At some point the commercials reached a critical mass, longer and more frequent. Completely unlistenable now.

Several years ago in Tampa we had a radio station switch its format to “All ‘Stairway to Heaven’”.
