Whether Stephanie White likes it or not, she has to deal with the issues that her players have gotten involved in.
One such issue is the backlash towards Sophie Cunningham, who commented in an ESPN profile that female athletes should be protected in sports where they “shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
Prior to the Indiana-Portland game on Friday, White was asked about her stance on this matter. The Fever head coach offered a disclaimer for her response.
“I don’t know that I would say that I’m educated enough from a scientific standpoint. I don’t ever believe that exclusion is the answer.”
When asked if there was “frustration” that off-court issues are dominating the discourse surrounding the Fever, White admitted that her team would have to learn how to deal with such narratives on the regular.
“There are some frustrations, of course, because we want to talk about basketball. We want to continue to work on our game…But I also understand that this is part of our growth edge as a league. We have to be able to manage. We have to be able to insulate as much as we can.”
It will be difficult for the Fever to insulate itself, however, if the fans’ energy remains at a high level.
Three days ago, the Fever-Fire game on Friday was preceded by a rally in support of Cunningham. The participants in this rally echoed their support for her stance on transgender athletes’ participation in women’s sports.

We already have an NBA that only excludes players who weren't good enough. The W in WNBA is 100% about exclusion.
I will say they didn't quit.
But the physical dominance at that age was very apparent.
One does not need very much education to know that biological males do NOT belong in women’s basketball!
The first requirement to be a good scientist is that you can observe the real world, reflect upon it, offer some hypothesis purporting to be of general validity and then collect evidence for and against the hypothesis to reach a conclusion. You know like people seem to fall into two classes based upon differentiating common characteristics which we call by convention male and female. We then observe a number of other differentiating traits. You can observe that jumping off of a cliff leads to being dead. Such mental acuity leads to survival and further propagation of the species.
It’s easy coach. Watch your team prepare for a game. Any woman who puts on a jock strap and cup gets benched.

I will admit, the US women’s Olympic hockey team is much better than they were 50 years ago, but I suspect the boys high school hockey team in northern Minnesota is too. That little town in northern Minnesota, is Warroad, population 1,830. I met Bill and Roger Christian, the 1960 Olympic gold medal winners. I got to hold their gold medals in my hot little hands. Later, they made a ton of money, making hockey sticks. 🤪

In 1998, Serena and Venus Williams said they could beat any man ranked outside the top 200 in the men’s division.
So, little known and 203rd ranked men’s player Karsten Braasch took them up on the challenge.
Braasch after a night of drinking and smoking with zero practice, destroyed Serena 6-1 and Venus 6-2 in straight sets.
The Williams sisters are the greatest female athletes of all time. And they barely made Braasch break a sweat.
It wasn’t because Braasch was very good. He wasn’t.
But, as a male, he possesses biological advantages even the best female athletes can’t compete against.
That’s the very reason we established women’s sports to begin with.
To even the playing field.
That shouldn’t be controversial. And you shouldn’t need a biology degree to understand it.
I met Christin Cooper of the U.S. women’s ski team, around 1982, in Solden, Austria. Had a nice friendly conversation with her. She was from Idaho, and Idaho, is where I learned to ski. 👍
From what I can tell, the key criterion for being a player in the WNBA is to be a tall, surly lesbian.
