Whether Stephanie White likes it or not, she has to deal with the issues that her players have gotten involved in.
One such issue is the backlash towards Sophie Cunningham, who commented in an ESPN profile that female athletes should be protected in sports where they “shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
Prior to the Indiana-Portland game on Friday, White was asked about her stance on this matter. The Fever head coach offered a disclaimer for her response.
“I don’t know that I would say that I’m educated enough from a scientific standpoint. I don’t ever believe that exclusion is the answer.”
When asked if there was “frustration” that off-court issues are dominating the discourse surrounding the Fever, White admitted that her team would have to learn how to deal with such narratives on the regular.
“There are some frustrations, of course, because we want to talk about basketball. We want to continue to work on our game…But I also understand that this is part of our growth edge as a league. We have to be able to manage. We have to be able to insulate as much as we can.”
It will be difficult for the Fever to insulate itself, however, if the fans’ energy remains at a high level.
Three days ago, the Fever-Fire game on Friday was preceded by a rally in support of Cunningham. The participants in this rally echoed their support for her stance on transgender athletes’ participation in women’s sports.

Total cop-out! I have no respect for anyone who responds with this type of gibberish.
IF the boys played them up straight they'd be hard pressed to cross half court.
That woman - the coach - is either dumb or a very intelligent coward.
The video evidence points both ways.
Did her mother ever tell her “she would not bleed to death” when she woke up after that first bleed “down there?”
If she said anything else her boss would fire her. I’ll give her a pass. She should have said, “I have no comment on this topic. I’m not an idiot.”
The WNBA is an activist league.
Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham are basketball players rather than activists.
What they really want is a lesbian and frankenstein mixed doubles league that will last until the last sycophantic rich moron’s money to run it runs out.
Clark and the straight White and Black players will never be able to play in America and we will once again be reminded that the left hates God hates America and hates us so they constantly destroy anything that is good and wholesome and we never have anything good.
What, you went straight to the pros after elementary school?
They've been doing that the past 30 years thanks to the NBA.
Typical hard-shell socialist position: include the nipple-Nazi whose nose is under their big tent!
“””If that idiot doesn’t understand it simply schedule a game with any high school boys team, college team or nba.
IF the boys played them up straight they’d be hard pressed to cross half court. “””
In high school my son was on the jv basketball team. They sucked. One day they played the girls varsity team and beat them badly. The girls team won the state championship that year.
And I am also not “educated” like a scientist would be. But I did make it through junior high biology class where we learned the difference between boys and girls. The textbook even had pictures so we could tell the difference.
Not activist enough to allow men to play on their teams though. They know damn well this would be the end of women's basketball as the rosters fill up with nobody other than 6'7" troons. (Admittedly, ratings would likely increase.)
Best I can tell, the only "transgender" player in the WNBA was Layshia Clarendon, who was born a female and then bravely changed her identity to "non-binary."
If a 30 year old gay man self identifies as a ten year old boy should be be allowed to play on a little league team and go on trips and ‘shower’ with the other ‘boys’?
If not, why not?
You’re a coach in the WNBA. What’s the criteria for W in WNBA, coach?
Gobbledygook.
The WNBA is finished.... as if it ever really got off the ground (it would not survive without subsidization from the NBA and constant touting by ESPN and ABC, i.e. Disney).
Cunningham and Clark should take their talents to Europe.
She must have received a very poor education indeed if she cannot distinguish a man from a woman. She and Ketanji what's-her-name should take a remedial course.
MAYBE THINGS ARE DIFFERENT ON A FARM-—
BUT WE KIDS KNEW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COWS & BULLS/ BILLY GOATS & NANNY GOATS/ MALE & FEMALE DOGS & CATS AT A VERY YOUNG AGE.
She doesn’t have to take a college biology course to learn the difference between men and women. In fact, it’s commonly learned during kindergarten recess when the kids play “Doctor”.
