Thank you very much and God bless you.

Filming nearby a couple of weeks back, I spotted the sign for 'Hincaster' and wondered why I'd never considered looking into its Roman origins before, and thus, this video came about.

I quickly discovered nobody knew where the Roman site was, but there must have been something visible in the early Medieval period for the place to pick up its name.

This is the story of a search, taking in the wider Roman landscape, the highly sketchy Roman road network and scanning LiDAR to see what could be seen. I think I've found a hint of where the 'castrum' may have been. Two potential sites, possibly.

Perhaps the best bit though, has been envisaging the landscape in the Roman period, resulting in a revised view of what may have been going on here in the days of Roman Britain, and, how important that was.

Also, some stunning landscapes and Roman sites, mainly shot in a rare northwestern heatwave.

With thanks to Phil Barrett for the excellent LiDAR.

Last year I found a $10 bill in the park. More money than this Castrum guy will get.

Radio transmitter invented by complete amateur.

One's professional state does not a measurement make. ;-D

Many wonderful sites like that were discovered totally accidentally by average buffoons. Even above average buffoons.

A friend of mine years ago found a 16th century English coin on the San Leandro CA beach. Drake?

Could be. I don’t think any verified artifacts from Drake’s landfalls on the west coast have ever been found, but that one sounds like a good candidate.

At least you got rocks. All I found was a hole.

The word in Latin for CAMP is CASTRA (neuter plural nominative). It takes the plural. It isn’t expressed in a singular form. Idiomatically, expressions like “castra ponere” (to pitch camp) or “castra movere” to break camp, are classic Latin expressions in every Latin I book.

Or a clumsy coin collector dropped it. It’s hard to be sure.
