I went into Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey expecting a cinematic event. Instead, I saw one of the worst movies ever made. I made it to the 90-minute mark before walking out, but I really should have bailed a half-hour in.
We have been utterly bamboozled. As someone who appreciates a script that actually works, I can tell you this screenplay is nonsensical. Combine that with unwatchable lighting and completely incomprehensible audio, and the whole production just falls apart on screen. Matt Damon is completely miscast and entirely too soft to play Odysseus. Honestly, the campy old Steve Reeves movies or Sinbad the Sailor pack more entertainment value than this bloated mess.
If anyone tells you this film is good, they are lying. It will not win—let alone be nominated for—a single Oscar. Do yourself a favor and see The Devil Wears Prada 2 or Michael instead. I am not exaggerating when I say that when my time comes to sit in a nursing home, my first request to the Almighty will be for a refund on the 90 minutes I lost to this three-hour joke. No one with an ounce of common sense should sit through it.

I loved Steve Reeves movies as a kid. They were a total scream.
I haven’t seen it, so I cannot prove you wrong.
I know some Freepers said it was a good movie.
I heard some of the diversity of the cast was intentionally done , so that the movie could qualify for the Academy Awards..
Mel Gibson is going to reshoot this film. It’ll have to be better.
Apparently their marketing department didn’t get a chance to pay you off.
I do like your review, nice little piece.
This has become the first Christopher Nolan film that I have absolutely no interest in seeing. Thank you for taking one for the home team. I will try to reciprocate come December when Avengers: Doomsday comes out (a movie that I dread to see, I just know it’s going to bomb).
But other than that Mrs Lincoln, how did you enjoy the show?
Can’t prove you wrong because I won’t see it except on tv.
WOAH
LOL
Not a fan, are we?
😂😂😂😂
How bad can a movie about a Honda minivan be?
So...did you like it?
I am going to repeat myself, because I am mad as hell at wasting my time on this, when I knew in my heart it was going to be bad. I am not kidding. People who know me on this forum that I tell the truth.
As a Chicago-born Greek American who is literally in the middle of fixing up a house in Vathy on the island of Ithaka, I could not wait for this movie. I prayed for something great. Then I started hearing the whispers about how “woke” it was and how completely it departs from Homer’s original story. Well, the whispers were right. Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey is a complete joke, and we have been bamboozled.
Where do I even begin? They somehow manage to make you feel sorry for the Cyclops when they poke his eye out. The Trojan horse sequence takes a grueling 45 minutes of screen time just showing hundreds of extras dragging the monstrosity from the beach. Instead of simply wheeling it in (which would take five minutes), they expect us to believe it washed ashore for days with the men trapped inside peeing and pooping on each other (yes, they actually say this). Then there is the incredibly stupid depiction of the suitors sitting outside trying to woo Penelope. As someone who owns a home on Penelope Street in Ithaka, I found it insulting. Combine this with Matt Damon acting like a total pussy as Odysseus, terrible lighting, and audio so muddy you can barely understand the dialogue, and the screenplay makes absolutely zero sense.
There were exactly five people in my theater. One guy came in alone, and four of us walked out early. I barely made it to 90 minutes, and that included going to the bathroom twice. Nobody is going to see this bloated mess, especially with the new Spiderman coming out on Thursday. Are you friggin kidding me? It’s dead on arrival.
Let me show you around, maybe play you a sound
You look like you're both pretty groovy
Or if you want something visual, that's not too abysmal
We could take in an old Steve Reeves movie
There is no way.... NO FRIGGIN way this is a rotton tomatoes 95%. No way...
Well, you’re not alone in your criticism:
‘The Odyssey’ Translator Emily Wilson Slams Christoper Nolan’s ‘Abysmal’ Screenplay: ‘I Would Be Ashamed to Have Written Any Part of This Script’
By Zack Sharf
It’s Tim Pools theory that the industry buy blocks of tickets so they can claim that the film is a blockbuster.
Nikos is just too close to it. It is a great movie, it would be sad not to take the opportunity to see it on the big screen, 70mm or IMAX if available. It has a very Christian Odyssey, and the cost of abandoning God.
