A teenager has pleaded guilty in a school shooting that killed two students and two teachers in the US state of Georgia.
Colt Gray, 16, was charged as an adult with malice murder, weapons violations and cruelty to children for the September 2024 shooting at Apalachee High School. Gray, who was 14 at the time of the shooting, entered a non-negotiated plea agreement meaning there will be no trial.
His father was convicted of murder in March for giving his son the gun used in the shooting as a Christmas present.
Gray told Judge Nicholas Primm that he understood the consequences of his plea, including forfeiting his rights to a jury trial or an appeal and the likelihood of a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
Testimony was heard from police officer Jason Smith, who interviewed Gray in the shooting's aftermath.
He appeared visibly emotional as he talked about a map of the school and evidence investigators found on Gray's cellphone and in a notebook, indicating months of planning.
Gray had made drawings of his classroom, written a step-by-step guide of how he was going to carry out the shooting and listed casualty numbers he anticipated. Gray's attorneys are not contesting the evidence.

I've seen defendants 'plead blind' and throw themselves on the mercy of the court without a deal when they think the judge will do better than the DA's offer, and I've seen lots of negotiated plea deals (common). But I'm not sure what a non-negotiated agreement is.

The mother of suspected Apalachee High School shooter Colt Gray has been indicted on charges of elder abuse.
The Ben Hill County indictment, obtained by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, accuses Marcee Gray of taping her mother, Deborah Polhamus, to a chair and leaving her there for nearly 24 hours.
She is charged with exploitation and intimidation of a disabled adult or elderly person, false imprisonment, criminal damage to property in the second degree, and theft. If convicted, she faces up to 20 years in prison.

Bodycam footage from May 2023 of Jackson County deputies interviewing the teen who went on to allegedly attack Apalachee High School shows him denying he had made any threats and deputies taking him at his word.
Breitbart News reported that the FBI was alerted to the suspect over a year before he allegedly opened fire in Apalachee High School. The FBI alerted Jackson County, and two Jackson County Sheriff’s deputies were sent to interview the then-13-year-old and his father.
Bodycam footage of that interview shows the father repeatedly telling deputies that he understands the magnitude of the alleged school shooting threats and that his son did too. The father described how “pissed off” he was going to be if he found out his son had made the threats.
