House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) was asked during a Capitol Hill press conference on Tuesday at what point he will move to use Congressional power to check President Donald Trump’s war in Iran. Johnson pointedly ended his reply by saying “we’ve got to wrap it up” in Iran, which many pundits and political insiders have warned is an additional threat to the GOP keeping its majorities in Congress.
Johnson’s answer appeared to be at odds with Trump, who vowed earlier in the day to continue bombing Iran until they come to the negotiating table in good faith.
“You repeatedly said that you trust the administration to handle the war with Iran. We’re now five months in, and the U.S. troop toll has surpassed that of the withdrawal from Afghanistan. Given that, at what point are you willing to put an AUMF on the floor, or vote for a War Powers Act resolution to try and remove it?” asked an off-camera reporter.
“The administration is working very hard — the commander-in-chief and the whole Department of War — they’re working very hard to bring this to a resolution. There’s a lot of discussion about how that will be done. We’re all closely watching those developments, of course. I don’t think an AUMF is in order right now. I think we need to bring it to a resolution,” Johnson replied, adding:
"Look, I think it’s important — in my personal view — for all of our international partners to have a role in this. I mean, we’ve got all of our allied nations, NATO, we’ve had the Arab countries over there, the Gulf states that are in closest proximity to Iran. Iran has now fired on all of its neighbors, and they’re turning everybody in the world into an enemy. So I think this is an important moment in history for the entire world community to decide how they want to handle this. It shouldn’t just be America’s obligation — my view is that everybody needs to play a role. So we’ll see how that develops. I think we have to allow the space to do that.
"And I know this administration is working around the clock to resolve that in a way so they don’t suffer any more troop losses. This is a great tragedy — it shouldn’t happen. But it is a very important objective, one that I believe we’ve achieved, to ensure that the largest state sponsor of terrorism does not have a nuclear weapon. That would be a disaster for everybody, and everybody around the world understands that.
"Now we’ve got to wrap it up."

I'm sure that the Iranians watch Fox News, and they have to be feeling pretty good.
Unless there's a military breakthrough pronto, the erosion of the base will accelerate. We're 104 days from the midterms. I'm pretty sure that the House is lost, but the longer this goes on, the greater the odds that the Senate falls too.

Johnson’s answer appeared to be at odds with Trump? Appearance can be deceiving. I am sure that Trump told Johnson that very same thing. So, the author’s speculation is just useless BS, as usual. Everyone agrees, especially Trump, that we need to wrap this thing up.
Iran is not attacking Israel right now.
Which means deterrence works.
Trump wants to make a deal. But the Iranians are not going to want to make a deal until the Democrats take over Congress.
Well let’s just quit and let them terrorize us and the world for another 47 years and maybe set of a nuke or two.
Too many Americans have no balls anymore to do what needs to be done. It may interfere with their lattes and social media.
As I see it, it’s not the war that’s really upsetting voters. It’s something related to the war, gas prices.
I’ve got a few swing voter and conservative friends who are vocally upset. They don’t talk about the war. They are upset about what’s up on those gas price signs.
Those folks are both short-sided and shallow.
But it is what it is.
So Johnson has a point.
He ain’t wrong. Bombing is not going to bring down the Iranian regime and we are (wisely) not putting boots on the ground.
It's nice to say you'll pull out, but how do you do it? Just go and hope the IRCG will stop being rogue and start being nice?
Gas prices are the greatest correlation to political approval. They get high, the other party benefits. It’s stupid, but it’s true.
So if "the Objective has been met", why are they still funding it?

Words of ignorance from yet another who doesn’t grasp the reality of neither the battlespace nor the motivation of the enemy.
Being conservative means facing facts, however unpleasant.
The fact is months and months have elapsed, and we’re supposed to believe Iranians are
“desperate to conclude a deal” yet they still have no problem killing our valuable military.
Iran would be rendered so “ineffective,” they’d even be “unable” to close the critical oil transport route ...... the Strait of Hormuz.
Now, 4½ months later, the US is still fighting w/ no end in sight, or even with a clear definition
of what an “acceptable end” would be -— w/ costs to taxpayers escalating into the mega billions.
And that’s a fact
It was supposed to be "In-N-Out Burger", but what we got was an exotic summer vacation abroad.
The votes that will decide these midterms are going to turn on gas prices, and ensuring that there are no more flag-draped coffins coming home from a conflict that we have supposedly “won” about 25 times already.
We have probably already taken more casualties and suffered more damage to our Middle East bases than the official story being told.
Pain at the pump and grocery store, along with the feeling of being back in another “forever Middle East war” draining blood and treasure when we were promised America First, will mean more than talk of hypothetical WMD’s that Iran has been “2 weeks away” from having for 40 years.
The neocon and Israel First arguments aren’t going to fly if this keeps going into the fall.
I’m not ready to have congressional Bolsheviks in power, more dead American troops, and a wrecked economy as the price to pay for trying to continue to reopen a strait that was not previously closed prior to March and attempts to eliminate WMD’s that don’t exist.
Iran is not some isolated small patch of flat open desert governed by goat humpers whose main arsenal of weapons are IED’s and idiots wearing suicide vests.
To take out a large, mountainous regional power that has resources and tech capability will need us to either mobilize for real war with all the monetary and blood sacrifices involved, or use tactical nukes and risk the ultimate Black Swan event.
For those who say “they have been fighting us for 47 years”, are you really ready to go full WW2 footing on the home front or risk a global great depression to fully wipe them out at this point? Or have your kids or grandkids sent to the front?
The Mullahs suck but so does $10/gallon gas, Middle East quagmires, Communists in Congress, and flag-draped American coffins.
This circular firing squad stuff makes the irgc very happy.
Time to go all in and lance this boil. We need a redux of Operation Linebacker Ii that effectively ended the fighting in Vietnam forcing the North Vietnamese to the negotiating table. Or something similar that was done in NATO’s war against Serbia. We destroyed their bridges and power plants.
The ceasefire was a mistake. The mullahs are just running out the clock. We can cripple Iran for decades by destroying their infrastructure and then declare victory. We can cripple”mow the lawn” periodically and keep the sanctions on.
