A receipt checker at a Florida Sam’s Club has been accused of letting a man walk out with stolen televisions and other high-end merchandise nearly 50 times — in a con pilfering $58,000 in goods.
Brenda Jacqueline Gayle Archer, 57, manned the door of the wholesale store in Sunrise, Fla., and would rubber-stamp the receipts of Troy Sidney Lawrence, 36, after he bought low-priced items and used the receipt to walk out with high-ticket items, NBC Miami reported, citing arrest records.
Archer, of Lauderhill, and Lawrence, of Sunrise, were arrested Tuesday for the “recurring scheme in which the same male suspect repeatedly exited the store with unpaid merchandise while purchasing only a minimal amount of low-cost items,” the reports said.
The club — located at 13550 West Sunrise Boulevard — earlier this month discovered missing TVs and other items with high price tags, which prompted an internal investigation and a review of six months of surveillance video.
The store uncovered that Lawrence made off with unpaid items on 46 occasions when Archer was assigned to check receipts at the exit of the wholesale club.
But each time she failed to check the items in his cart against his receipt, cops allege.
For example, Lawrence on June 8 paid for a TV wall mount — but brazenly waltzed out with two Samsung TVs, surveillance footage and store purchase records showed.
Sam’s Club alleges the total the pair stole was worth $58,000.

Yeah. No. Right back. That can and will work at Walmart. You are correct. It is your stuff and unless they have reason to believe it is stolen merchandise, all they can do is ask. They cannot force you to show them your receipt.
The rules you agree to for a membership at Sam's Club and Costco say they get to check. If you choose not to comply at these places, your membership can be revoked. In this case, it was Sam's Club. They can and will check your receipts against your goods.
Yet they got away with it early FIFTY TIMES! If only they had stopped at #45.

After retiring from a career in corporate marketing, I took a job in a retail chainstore for something to do. I learned that shoplifters were selling their plunder on online sites, which was then a rapidly growing phenomenon. Every practical suggestion I made to my higher ups to control shrink was either against existing company policy, not allowed because local stores could not customize in ways that varied with national averages, or dismissed because of ageism and sexism directed against me.
I'm sure I'm not the only employee who tried to help; but while the market still exists for that product line, that large, long-time national chain went out of business a few years ago, and no other store has yet fulfilled its niche. Lawlessness kills capitalism.

Related...our son manages a good tire store. Small shop, but in a wealthy town and lots of repeat business. Professional people can get tires and car services done during weekdays. People don’t do a lot of car work on their weekends off.
Down in lower income places like East San Jose, the people cannot just take off to get work done during their own work hours, so they depend on weekends and later closing hours.
Corporate decided all 1,600 stores have to stay open until 7 pm and be open all day Sunday. It’s a one-size-fits-all rule, with no room for local exceptions. It’s a huge waste of money for our son’s operation. I was astonished at their lack of understanding of local markets.
Under Mayor Lomelo, a former nightclub operator, Sunrise became promiscuous in expanding through annexation and granting zoning and permitting for commercial development. Some of the money stuck to Lomelo’s fingers, which resulted eventually in a federal prison sentence.
Bingo — you described it exactly. The store I worked for sold lots of small wares and dry goods. We could have sold ten times the purple and maroon items because those are the team colors for the Baltimore Ravens and the DC team (formerly Redskins); but no, we only got what every other store in the chain got, across the country.
Many of these retail chains are in a consortium that manages multiple types of businesses under one holding company manned by MBAs with no actual experience of the type of work being done or the type of customer utilizing each type of business. They manage greeting card stores the same way as restaurants or drugstores, just sending out a clipboard of regulations every few weeks, keeping an eye on their personal stock portfolios at a vast remove from the places of work generating their high income. It’s as you say, a huge waste of money and a suppression of the working people making barely more than minimum wage to run these places with their hands tied behind their backs.
Musk’s recent reward to his working people was an excellent role model that needs to be widely imitated.
Very interesting...and a sad state of affairs. Our son is a superstar, but that ridiculous centralized planning wears him down and he gets resigned to the futility of it all — “there’s nothing I can do, it’s corporate.” His guys are very unhappy having to stay the extra hour at the end of the day. That means family plans, going to kids ball games, dinners, evening plans...all fouled up for an extra hour of open time at the end of the day. It sounds like everybody is looking to leave.
Don’t those corporate suits ever think about these things?

The holding company dudes who wrecked the venerable old company I had worded for (which had started out as a cherished family company since the 1940s until there was no suitable heir to lead it and it went public), looked to be barely out of their twenties. Several had been fraternity brothers. I don’t know how they made the acquisition of a large number of companies, but over the past decade, three of their nationwide retailers that I know of have gone under. So no, those particular ones didn’t think of anything beyond self-interest.
Since diversity is our greatest strength and all cultures are equal we need to adopt the Saudi tradition of chopping off the hands of thieves.
Nope. Not enthusiastic. Just stating that it's an agreement you sign in order to be a member. I agree with you regarding Walmart or anywhere else. I've been asked before to show my receipt and I say "no." But if you sign an agreement to belong to something, then it is incumbent upon you to abide by that agreement. Is it not?

I interned with the Broward County Legislative Delegation during the annexation feeding frenzy of the early 80’s. John was infamous.
Multiply by thousands, all over the country. Happens every day, in many retail stores. It’s one reason why everything costs so much.
