As data center backlash grows in Florida, here’s why Miami projects are different
Miami Herald ^ | July 17, 2026 | Alex Harris and Alexandra Phelps

The potential spread of massive water and electricity-consuming data centers into Florida has sparked fierce opposition from thousands of residents and drawn dividing lines between its most powerful politicians.

But, experts say, the projects popping up in Miami-Dade are unlike those that grab headlines for fouling drinking water and driving up power bills — for now. The best example yet of Florida’s pushback against the spread of data centers may have been Thursday’s Palm Beach County Commission meeting, where officials gave a firm no to a proposed project called “Project Tango” that would have placed a data center using as much electricity as the city of Tallahassee right next to the Everglades.

Project Tango is now the fifth large data center project stopped by Floridians, including Sentinel Grove in St. Lucie, Silver Fox in Martin County, Deltona in Citrus County and Okee-One in Okeechobee.

Several counties have also issued moratoriums for data centers — Leon County, Nassau County, Pasco County, Sarasota County, Citrus County and Jackson County. In Citrus County, where a small town was slated to play host to Florida’s first hyperscale data center, opponents of the project packed the commission and exceeded its overflow room, the Tampa Bay Times reported. The project was canceled.

That is the main fuel of populist resentment toward the elites.

Framing this as class warfare or national defense is just a distraction. The real problem is the sheer economic madness of the current build-out. We are spending $$$Trillions to build capacity that goes way beyond our current needs. It makes no sense, especially when you consider that the AI models and system architectures of tomorrow are constantly shifting. We are locking ourselves into massive, permanent physical costs for technology that will likely be obsolete in a few years. This wastefulness is going to have massive economic consequences.

“Stopping hypersonic missiles is a matter of localized military hardware and physics.”

That is an interesting comment.

I would have thought detecting the future launch of ICBMs might be the job of satellites over one continent which would then flash a signal to tracking stations elsewhere and the activation of defensive interceptors at sea or on yet a different continent; sort of an integrated system.

But you say stopping 10,000 hypersonic missiles simultaneously “is a matter of localized military hardware.”

And vacuum tubes, I suppose.

“I CAN KEEP MY PHOTOS IN SCRAPBOOKS & NEVER HAVE TO PAY “THE CLOUD” TO ACCESS THEM”

Yes you can.

And you could have sent this message to us using first class mail; but you didn’t.

I think you and I both know why you bought a computer and/or smart phone - and pay a monthly fee to use it - and why you insist on the right to do so in the future.

Oh, give me a break!!! Of course, real-time radar and satellite imagery are important components, but they have zero to do with commercial data centers. With hypersonic missile defense, latency is everything. There is absolutely no time to route data to an external AI database and wait for cloud compute capabilities to have even the slightest effect. But please tell me more.

Energy Consumption: A primary reason for the hype is that these facilities require power on the scale of entire cities, which has driven up utility costs in several state.

The anti-tech and anti-tech oligarch themes have tremendous populist resonance.

And a good reason to do so.

Energy costs are reduced by data centers

ROFLMAO

Where exactly has the addition of a data center reduced energy costs?

America’s hope in keeping up with China’s AI build out is going to require data centers in orbit because we aren’t ramping up the power on the ground fast enough to come anywhere close to projected demand.

While U.S. data center power demand is projected to double to 66 gigawatts (GW) by 2027 and strain the domestic power grid, China already generates roughly twice as much electricity as the U.S., though its data centers remain heavily reliant on coal

I know that people don't want to believe it - BUT they'll wake up one day SOON and find out that virtually everything in their lives is Tracked, Analyzed and they just might be GEOFENCED to limited areas (Financially)

NO it WILL NOT be the actual Mark of the Beast just yet - but it WILL function much like it

And no, this is not going to be stopped from happening

Listen to me now and believe me later 😄😁😆

The data centers need to be placed in northern Canada, near arctic waters.

I agree that the AI craze (including the geofencing aspect) isn’t the actual Mark, but it certainly looks to be the framework on which it will be constructed.

Sort of like the fact that some out there believe Pres. Trump is the Antichrist. IMHO, he’s not, and the idea that he is just comes across as silly. However, some of the things his administration is doing or building, could be a framework that will be co-opted by the Son of Perdition after Trump is gone, and used to build his One World Empire.

AI Overview: (irony is ironic 😼)

Over 140 nations host operational data centers worldwide, but the massive, gigawatt-scale campuses for AI and cloud are primarily led by 30 to 40 highly digitalized nations. The United States dominates, while China, Germany, the U.K., Japan, France, Canada, India, and Australia lead an unprecedented GLOBAL DATA CENTER Boom.

Nearly 3,000 new data centers are currently under construction or planned across the United States, with over 1,500 in various stages of active development nationwide. This massive buildout is largely driven by the explosive demand for artificial intelligence and cloud computing.

Texas: 140 data centers under construction

Virginia: 136 data centers under construction

Georgia: 56 projects under construction

Ohio: 51 projects under construction

Globally, the sector is experiencing unprecedented expansion, with companies expected to invest nearly $7 trillion in building and upgrading data centers between now and 2030 to support an expected tripling of digital demand.

2030, eh? 🤔🤔🤔

I’m convinced that the Son of Perdition
WILL take advantage of “Middle East Peace”

Of course people will reject that as complete
nonsense, which I understand. 🤣

But once it kicks off, NOTHING will stop it
all the way to the actual Battle of Armageddon
and the Actual Second Coming
of the Lord Jesus Christ
back to this Earth.

Everything keeps taking the Whole World 🌎🌍🌏
to that which our Lord has prophesied. ✝️✝️✝️

IMHO the Son of Perdition
the Man of Sin,
the Man of Lawlessness,
the Antichrist
comes from Europe 🌍
OR the Middle East 🌍

Tracking is just the first part. What they are really aiming for, is to simulate the entire world, so that they can predict how the world reacts to events. Like plandemics. Polymarket is a microcosm of how the big money wants to know about the future, so they can figuratively bet on it, and prepare for changes, in advance of others.

But they’ve hit multiple snags. First, not enough natural resources. Second, computer chip prices are making it impossible to actually build many servers without going broke. But most importantly, AI has already turned into Mr. Hyde a lot quicker than Dr. Jekyll thought it would. So all this talk about data centers is now just hype to try to keep the bubble from bursting.

Such blanket and mob opposition to Data Centers in FL is ignorance on parade.
