Randolph Mantooth, who starred as the goofy but gallant firefighter-paramedic Johnny Gage on Emergency!, the 1970s NBC action show that changed life-saving services as we know it, has died. He was 80.

Mantooth died Thursday at a hospice facility in Ventura, California, his brother, Donald Mantooth, told The Hollywood Reporter. He had been “ill for a number of years and kept getting thinner and thinner,” he said.

Mantooth also had two stints (1987-90 and 1993-95) as Clay Alden/Alex Masters on the ABC soap opera Loving, and he appeared on other daytime serials including ABC’s General Hospital, CBS’ As the World Turns and ABC’s One Life to Live.

Awwww. He was a goofball. But then, they both were. Not sure what was so appealing about the show but we watched it every week. RIP, Randolph Mantooth.

Kevin Tighe and Robert Fuller are still alive. Fuller is 92.

That’s the first thing I thought of.
I just logged on to mention that.

“a personally autographed picture of Randy Mantooth.”

RIP. Great show. Adam 12 and Emergency always had good stories. Both shows promoted by Jack Webb. We had an elderly family friend who was a fireman in Los Angeles and provided advice for movies and tv shows. He said Emergency helped get the paramedic services off the ground.

From Copilot Search:

Randolph Mantooth, who played paramedic Johnny Gage on the 1970s NBC series Emergency!, did not hold an official paramedic certification, but he did receive real paramedic training and was considered “good enough” to have taken the exam for official status in Los Angeles County.

When Mantooth was cast, he had no idea what a paramedic was — there were only a handful in California at the time. To prepare for the role, he underwent paramedic training alongside his co-star Kevin Tighe, who also completed the same program. The training was based on real-life emergency call logs and included both medical and rescue skills, such as auto extrication and trauma care.

Although they didn’t end up being certified, Mantooth and Tighe completed enough instruction that they would have qualified to sit for the official paramedic exam. This level of training was so thorough that many fans and even some in the fire service community thought he was a real firefighter-paramedic during the show’s run.

In fact, Mantooth was later honored with honorary paramedic status from the Los Angeles Fire Department for his work on the series. He also spoke at firefighter and EMS conferences, advocating for firefighter health and safety.

Bottom line: Mantooth wasn’t a certified paramedic, but his training was so complete and realistic that he was functionally qualified to be one, and his portrayal on Emergency! was so authentic that it helped popularize the paramedic profession nationwide.

That album came out in ‘75, so Mantooth would have been 29 or 30-ish at the time.

I always thought that guy was their grandpa when they were asking for medical advice. They kept calling him grandpa.
