Insulted [Reddit] diner gets ‘fat-shamed ‘ by restaurant order screen at all-you-can-eat buffet: ‘So dystopian’

A diner was shocked and appalled after allegedly getting calorie-shamed by a restaurant’s order screen, per a viral Reddit post.

According to the thread, shared to the forum’s “Mildly Infuriating” forum, the customer had ordered three lamb skewers at an undisclosed “all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant.”

This seemed standard enough, but when the patron went to check out digitally, they received an on-screen pop-up warning about their food intake.

“For your own health concern, an average adult’s intake should not exceed 1,000 calories,” the advisory read. “Your current calorie intake is 2,000 calories. Are you sure you want to proceed?”

In the bottom right corner, a calorie counter noted that their current lamb kebabs order totaled 240 calories while prior orders clocked in at 1,760 calories — an amount that they deemed “good to serve two people.”

They also noted that an extra fee may apply for “unfinished food.”

Many Redditors were taken aback that the customer would be flagged for their food intake at an alleged bottomless banquet.

“Hey fatty you sure you wanna be so fat?” snarked one, referencing the prompt’s alleged fat-shaming messaging. “Click yes to agree to fatness.”

...

“This is very common at an all-you-can-eat, specifically at Asian restaurants,” claimed one defender. “It is to prevent excess food waste.”

Unfortunately, it’s not just customers who are wasting food.

“Worst part of working third shift at Buc-ee’s is throwing away all the food that you work so hard to make,” said one. “Throw away 50 [sandwiches] to make 150 more that night just to throw away 95 of those in 2 days.”

It is still not the restaurant’s place to post it on their check out board. It’s a great way to lose customers.

I think Democrat do-gooders got the government to require restaurants to post the calories and fat content of their dishes. I don't pay any attention to them, but this was over the top.

Eventually AI will be used to impose food-rationing and monitoring how many calories you eat.

“ And the math is wrong anyways. 2000 Cal/day is a way to lose weight. 1000/day = starvation.”

Read the message more closely! It does not say “per day” and common sense dictates that it is for a single meal! Since the norm is three meals per day that would result in a 3000 calorie daily intake.

“Insulted [Reddit] diner gets ‘fat-shamed ‘by restaurant order screen at all-you-can-eat buffet: ‘So dystopian’”. I don’t go to all-you-can-eat buffets anymore because of health issues and restraining orders, I know when I’ve been wrong, I’m not going to fight it.

Everybody is a victim these days.

And that includes me. I just wish I could find something that would allow me to sue somebody.

Hmm… I think I might have a case after all. My local convenience store simply refuses to stock any traditional Hungarian food. That’s just wrong.

It should read:

If you’re a fat woman that wears flat shoes and has short hair, that makes fun of Melania Trump and Lauren Sanchez because they make you feel inferior, you may want to lay off with those extra servings.

I committed the FR sin of actually reading the article and compounded it by clicking through to the original Reddit post - but still didn’t find where this happened. Appears to be in the US but would be interesting to know which major city in which blue state.

The wife and I went to a local Asian restaurant with all you can eat buffet available. One thing that was good was the crab legs. A hefty couple sat near the buffet. As soon as they brought out another tray of crab legs these to lard asses got up and took the entire tray. F’n pigs.
Don’t do glutton buffets anymore. Never ate more than one plate anyway so it was not worth the price.
However, Risky’s BBQ in the FW stockyards used to have all you can eat beef ribs. Oh man, steak on a stick. Now that was some good grub when I was young enough to burn off the extra calories!!

I had to chuckle at that. 1,000 calories a day for a 6 foot man would put you into a bad state after a few weeks. That’s starvation level calories.

“ It is a public health awareness campaign encouraged”

Correct. Except it’s not encouraged. Obama mandated it.

It’s in all menus now.

A man that only eats 2000 calories a day will eventually starve. 1000 a day is almost like a hunger strike.

It really seems like the goal is to kill people with voluntary starvation.

I think you are giving them too much credit. I could easily see the average tiny Asian thinking 1000 calories a day is recommended. By the absence of specifics, you fill in a reasonable theory, but I suspect it’s not their intention.

Maybe Skynet was referring to 1,000 cal for this one meal, which could imply 3,000 per day.

And the article misquoted the screen — it said, “Are you sure to proceed?”

Reminds me of “All your base are belong to us.”

I think their reasoning is to keep it under 1000 calories per meal, as we all eat at least twice a day, if not 3 or 4 times.

Nah. 2000 is a more or less reasonable number for an active or working individual. Sedentary and/or older people can gain weight on 2k. The RDA is based on a bunch of assumptions, as one might expect from a government bureaucracy.

1000 is a pretty reasonable figure for moderate weight loss. Sustainable over time, 1.5 to 2 pounds a week is about the average limit for most people over time.

It is nowhere near enough for active adults male or performing at a moderate exertion level.

You’re correct, it doesn’t say “per day”; it doesn’t say “per meal” either, there is no way to interpret what they wrote other than a declarative statement of 1000 calories.
