Nearly 1 million people who bought President Trump’s memecoin have lost money through the end of June, according to a report by the cryptocurrency analytics firm Nansen. Their losses total $3.81 billion.
The analytics firm’s assessment was calculated this week after Mr. Trump signed an annual financial disclosure showing that he walked away with a $636 million payout on the same crypto bet, part of a haul of at least $2.2 billion from all of his business ventures in 2025.
Once a crypto skeptic, Mr. Trump embraced the profit-making opportunity of digital currencies in 2024, while he was running for president. He and his sons founded a crypto start-up called World Liberty Financial, which soon began selling a coin called $WLFI that has also declined sharply.
Three days before his inauguration, Mr. Trump unveiled a second Trump-branded investment — the $TRUMP memecoin, a type of novelty currency with little practical value.
“It’s time to celebrate everything we stand for: WINNING!” Mr. Trump wrote on social media. “Join my very special Trump community. GET YOUR $TRUMP NOW!” But that turned out to be bad advice.
Most crypto transactions are publicly visible, recorded on a digital ledger called the blockchain. That allows analysts to trace purchases of digital coins from individual crypto accounts, known as wallets. Nansen’s data shows that, as of the end of June, 988,905 buyers of the $TRUMP memecoin have lost money, representing roughly two out of every three buyers.

Its funny. I made my first purchase when it was $88. It hasn’t been “down” much since I bought it.
Written by the NYT, so no credibility.
I invested in this coin. My reasoning was that Trump would be making a fortune, and this would be a way to rise along with him. I don’t know what happened, because Trump made a lot of money, and on paper I should have as well.
is this the token issued at $7 - which traded as high as $60-70 after issuance?
The hypocrisy of the DJT crypto critics is astounding.
No wonder the party’s being overrun by socialists & avowed communists.
Americans lose well over $50 billion annually on lottery tickets. While total national ticket sales exceed $100 billion each year.
Get rich quick is a once in a lifetime deal for the few.
Thanks for the morning chuckle ;-)
I don't think the purpose of the article is to generate sympathy for those who might have lost money. The purpose of the article is to generate more hate against President Trump.
It’s sad to watch the Socialist DemonRATs having to pretend to feel bad for millionaires and billionaires who lost money. Hypocrites!
I really wonder how many die-hard Trump fans are angry at him because they lost money in this coin, while he and his children profited. Could this have some marginal effect in the midterms?
How did the holders of tether make money with it?
Tether holders make zero money on appreciation or interest. Tether is just a super convenient n cheaper way to send payments compared to the conventional ways. They love it in S Korea.
To keep tether coins pegged at 1 USD the business that supplies tether coins backs them up w US Treasuries and iirc some extrapolation and slight shenanigans. (see AI more details) ..... Tether Limited Inc. collects the interest from these US Treasuries. This is why they are super profitable, ten billion or so yearly.
...........Tether, often referred to by its currency codes USD₮ and USDT, is a cryptocurrency stablecoin launched by Tether Limited Inc. in 2014.[3][4] It is pegged to the United States dollar.............
Trump has long been involved in the gaming industry....
A meme coin is also a sort of gambling so..,..
“I’ve never really looked at crypto as an investment”
it’s not ... nothing more than a spin of a digital Roulette Wheel ... though if we could come up with digital tulips, we might have something!
“Possibly its real value is years hence...like a copper penny or a buffalo nickel.”
except that you’ll never be able to hold TrumpCrypto in your hand or put it in a display case for sale or put a picture of it on ebay or craigslist to sell ... other than that, it would make a great collector’s item ...
since USD stablecoins are by definition supposed to always be worth exactly ONE USD, they’re useless for “investment” ... however, they’re useful for facilitating trade in other cryptos, which are used for criminal and terrorist transactions, which are the ONLY uses that have been found for cryptos EXCEPT rank speculation ...
“It’s time to celebrate everything we stand for: WINNING!” Mr. Trump wrote on social media. “Join my very special Trump community. GET YOUR $TRUMP NOW!”
As long as President Trump and the First Family made well-deserved profits, I have no objection to the Trump Crypto Coin.

Ask not what presidential meme coin can do for you-ask what you can do for the president’s meme coin.
I always considered the Trump crypto to be a campaign donation and nothing more.
