Of course there were negative reviews from critics - who believe the emphasis should have been on Washington as an "evil slave owner."
My wife and I toured Mount Vernon a few years ago. In a 20 minute tour, it was mentioned about a dozen times that George Washington had enslaved people.
Ditto for just about anything in the South these days.
We took a city tour in Charleston, SC, recently and it was all about slavery - same when we toured beautiful old plantations in Louisiana - all about slavery.
George Washington was the greatest American who ever lived. His critics are among the worst.
There is a lot of good discussion there too. I had the same impression you did!
Spoken by the baby-killing hypocrites.
But it says “mixed reviews from critics.” How could you possibly disagree with “critics”?
Same with Monticello. Tours there speak extensively about Jefferson’s involvment with slavery.
Ah yes the critics...the leftists who judge a movie on whether “the message” is being told.
Ken Burns is a leftists POS.
I visited the home of Cassius Clay, cousin of the more famous Henry Clay, a few years ago. It was near Halloween and it was supposed to be a "ghost tale night". I called it the "Let's Hate Cassius Clay Night" because they had almost nothing about spooky ghost stories and lots about Clay owning some slaves.
We saw it yesterday.
Packed theater at all shows yesterday.
Audience applauded at the end of an excellent movie.
Americans are proud of our heritage.
Libs and commies hate the Country.
Movie fails completely to portray Washington as a man of faith. That’s what made him so great.
Of all the books he is depicted as having read, I don’t think the bible was mentioned once.
Spoiler Alert!
Washington takes a bullet at the end of the French Indian War, and dies in Martha’s arms.
RE: it was mentioned about a dozen times that George Washington had enslaved people.
Did they mentioned the fact that George Washington freed the slaves that he owned upon his death, according to his 1799 will?
Did they mention that many formerly enslaved workers, such as Sambo Anderson (a carpenter) and Jim Mitchell, remained working at Mount Vernon or returned to Washington’s estate as paid employees in the following years?
If not, they’re not telling the full story.
I saw it today. I thought it was very well done. Made it very clear that Washington chafed under the stratified British society and that ambitious people who wanted to do well for themselves would need to create a society with more Liberty. Also (of course) showed Washington as a military leader of rare character and brilliance. Very patriotic. I really had no complaints at all.
The decision of Washington to reject becoming America’s first king, despite being urged to do so by many powerful colonists, after the defeat of the British is regarded by scholars as the defining moment that launched the new democratic republic. It’s very likely that he could have successfully seized power but instead took a principled stand to allow the American “experiment” to proceed. I saw the movie yesterday and enjoyed the overall celebration of the man while yearning for more detail. It could have been much more detailed but I guess there’s only so much you can fit into two hours.
