In a new interview, Colin Kaepernick spoke about some problematic childhood instances, including his adoptive mother saying his cornrows made him look like “a little thug.”
CNN reported that while talking with CBS journalist Adriana Diaz for a Thursday interview, the former NFL player said his adoptive white parents perpetuated racism within the home. “I know my parents loved me, but there were still very problematic things that I went through,” Kaepernick told Diaz.
1. “I think it was important to show that, no, this can happen in your home, and how you move forward collectively while addressing the racism that is being perpetuated,” he said.
Those moments included his mother thinking he looked “not professional” and “like a little thug” when he had cornrows as a child. Kaepernick said, “Those become spaces where it’s like, ‘How do I navigate this situation now?’ But it also has informed why I have my hair long today.”

How was he able to acquire cornrows ‘as a child’ if his mom disapproved?
His boyfriend braided them for him.
He took a knee until she caved. He wore a T-shirt that said “Mom Sucks” until she caved. He only cut part of the grass to read, “BLM” on their lawn until she caved. He turned his back on the family that gave him a good life - until she caved.
Let’s continue to make him the victim and hope he gets another contract from Nike.... but if he doesn’t... Blame Nike - not him. Never him.

Part of my point was the ‘as a child’ bit. Makes it sound like he was five or something. As a kid in high school getting cornrows at a barber shop would be no problem and he likely would look like a little thug.
As others have pointed out, doing this to the family that took you in, fed you, sheltered you and saw you on your way to your football career is despicable. His big complaint is that they did not worship his ‘blackness’.
I had hoped I would not see his name for the rest of my life.
And now, he just looks like a dork!
