WNBA Suspends Mercury’s Alyssa Thomas 1 Game for Hit to Caitlin Clark’s Throat

Alyssa Thomas will serve her one-game suspension on Saturday when the Phoenix Mercury visit the Toronto Tempo.

The WNBA has suspended Phoenix’s Alyssa Thomas for one game after she made contact with her fist to Caitlin Clark’s throat in Wednesday night’s matchup against Indiana. It happened with 6:52 left in the second quarter and was deemed to be a non-basketball act. The league gave Thomas a Flagrant Foul 2 penalty for it. No foul was called on the play by officials.

The WNBA is allowed to review a game to reclassify a Flagrant foul or to classify as Flagrant any foul not called as such during a game.

SNIP

“It was egregious. The fact that it was a no-call … You got to call it,” said Fever coach Stephanie White after the game. “You’re coming in here aware of what happened two nights ago and that (expletive) still happens? Absolutely unacceptable.” This isn’t the first time the league has upgraded a foul against Clark. Last season Marina Mabrey, when she was with Connecticut, received a technical foul in a game against Indiana. The league later upgraded it to a Flagrant 2. Over the years the NBA has had a few instances where the league upgraded a play that resulted in a suspension.

Should have been banned and arrested.

As little as I care for female thug ball, this is nowhere NEAR enough. What they have done to that poor girl C.C. is nothing short of criminal. I wouldn’t be surprised to see C.C. bail (justifiably so) to friendlier climes in Europe. Wonder what they will have to bitch about when their golden goose has flown the coop.

Those bitches are gonna kill that girl if she doesn’t get herself into another way of playing. Even another country. It ain’t worth your life to stay where you’re getting beat up like that.

So you think she should walk away from $40M to play in another country?

Oh, that’ll keep them all from terrorizing her anymore. NOT!

A 10 game suspension might have gotten their attention.

Absolutely correct. Bullies will not back down on their own. And racist bullies will escalate things besides not backing down.

The WNBA will simply fold without Clark. First, because she's such a great draw, her absence will be a huge loss of audience. Second, because everyone will know that she left because of the ugly personal violence, and when she's not there, the ugly violence remains and the remaining players will eat their own with ugly in-fighting.

They might hold a few fans of violence, but if they want to watch fights, ice hockey is better. There certainly won't be much basketball playing going on.

Suspend the officials.

Charges should be filed for attempted murder.

Dave Chappelle famously walked away from $50M on principle. She can walk away from $40M if it means she doesn't get killed or paralyzed or lose a limb. Her choice.

Maybe she likes the United States. We teach kids today to cower in the corner and surrender at the first obstacle. Maybe that’s why we are losing our country, too many surrender monkeys.

Dave Chappelle was in his 30's, and already made a lot of money. Supposedly he's worth over $70M today, so he did well without that money.

Depends on what another league might offer her.

I get why Clark might want to stay where she is, besides the money. I’m sure it was a dream of hers to star in the WNBA.

On the other hand, a serious injury could be delivered by one of those thugs. Then her career is over. That could happen on the court. Or it could happen in the locker room.

Clark really needs to sit down with an insider, and get some solid advice. She’s in a difficult position. I wish her well.

The foul has become way more famous than their game. They had to do something.

It's not about what the league offers her. I think her initial contract with the Fever was $76,000.

But she gets $28M form Nike, etc. They pay her that endorsement money to play in the U.S. She might as well play in the WNBA for free. It's just a necessary condition for her to make all the other money.

Nike doesn't want to give her $28M to play in Latvia.

And not for nothing, she grew up as a little girl dreaming of playing in the WNBA.

No argument. But I think she also recognizes that if she fought back, and seriously smacked the crap out of one of those attackers, the rest of them would mob her and she would die or be so injured as to never play again. So she tolerates each instance of the abuse and hopes to survive it so she can keep playing. Her choice. She's not chicken, she's making a conscious choice each time she goes out on the court to risk that danger.

Good point.

Perhaps I should rethink that offer for me to join a bocce league in Latvia.

In all seriousness, how much money is enough for Clark? Many boxers fought longer than they should have, just because. Then they spent the rest of their lives dogged by chronic injuries. The same goes with football players.

In Clark’s case, that chronic injury might come not from the game, but from other players. Sad.

I’ve heard the WNBA loses money every year. I’ve heard they have never made a profit. They only stay in business because they are subsidized by the regular NBA.

So is it a race thing, a jealousy thing, if these black women basketball players don’t like caitlin clark? Yet Caitlin Clark is bringing a lot of positive attention to their league. Which otherwise gets very little.

You wonder about the thought processes of some people. They would rather beat up Caitlin Clark, and they’d probably be happy if she left the league. Yet they don’t understand or appreciate that she’s brought a lot of positive publicity to them.

The WNBA will simply fold without Clark.

Unfortunately, probably not because they'll continue to be funded by the NBA (even though no one will be watching the little bitches).
