A possible price leak for the upcoming Slate electric truck has created a surprising amount of buzz online. Enthusiasts digging through the Slate Truck website found a hidden reference to a starting price of $24,950. Neither the company nor its representatives have confirmed the figure, but that has not stopped people from talking about it, much like they did when Torque News first covered Slate's bare bones design philosophy.
This is a developing story because now we are expecting what will come next from Slate about its EV truck's price leak after this price leak.
What is interesting is that the excitement may have very little to do with Slate itself. Let me ask you a simple question. If a brand new vehicle really cost $24,950 today, would you be more interested in the price or the vehicle. Keep that question in mind as you read, and share your answer in the comments section below after you have finished the article.
At first glance, the excitement surrounding the Slate truck price leak might seem surprising. After all, this is not a Ferrari. It is not a Corvette. It is not even a high performance EV designed to break acceleration records.
Instead, the vehicle attracting so much attention is a relatively simple electric pickup from a startup that has not yet delivered a production vehicle to customers. Some Torque News readers have already argued that the Nissan Leaf offers similar range and far more practicality for only a little more money.
So why is everyone talking about it.
The answer may reveal something much bigger than the Slate truck itself.

Yeah very exciting, go back to cars with accessory packages from the WW2 era of cars. Exciting you betcha.
First of all, it’s not going to start at $24,950.
The trouble with Slate is that price was the goal back when it was first developed. Back when there was a $7500 EV credit.
That’s all gone now. Gone, gone, gone.
But I’m still interested. Very. If it can successfully come to market at or around $30K, it should do well.
I hope so.
I remember 55 years ago you could buy a good new PU trick for $2000. But then, I was only making $1 and hour at that time.
NOT an EV.
I misspoke. There’s no SUV version but you can get hard top for it if you want.
Honda just posted its first loss in its history and they said they’re going to fix it by eliminating production of all EV vehicles.
The main reason vehicles are becoming less and less affordable is all the mandated equipment the government is forcing automakers to install.
It started with ABS and TPMS, but now monitoring and spyware is minding your every move. New vehicles as of next year will even be checking your mental state and refusing to run if you don’t meet their pre-loaded parameters.
Add a hand crank to it, just like a Model T
My god, almost makes me want to buy a Trax:-(
My recollection was their goal was first $20,000.
The buzz is it is a simple pickup truck at an affordable price. It doesn’t have bells and whistles, big screens, and four doors. It would be better if it was a 4 cylinder without a turbo.
Yeah. And $19,995 was the base price for the Ford Maverick when it was first announced. I doubt anyone was able to buy one at that price, but who knows.
What I like about the Slate is that - unlike the Tesla - it will be built without tax breaks, subsidies, EV credits and other gubmint handouts.
Per AI....
Major backers of the electric vehicle startup Slate Auto include Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, TWG Global (led by Los Angeles Dodgers owner and Guggenheim Partners executive Mark Walter), and the venture capital firm General Catalyst. These heavy-hitting investors have helped the Michigan-based automaker raise roughly $1.4 billion across multiple funding rounds to develop their affordable, analog EV trucks.
Stop putting government regulations on cars and they’d get cheaper
If they come out with something in that price range I’d buy one just to haul my kayak and bike around in and for trips to the lumber store. Rather than driving my 2500HD.
It starts at $15k USD. It's a very no-frills truck, but I'd bet it runs forever.
I remember the Ford Maverick base price was announced at $1,995, and Ford delivered it at that price.
When enthusiasts discovered the hidden code, they did not immediately start debating battery chemistry or motor output. They focused on the price,
