Problem with Firefox

Posted on 06/18/2026 4:59:37 PM PDT by FlatulusMaximus

Has anyone encountered problems with he latest Firefox update? It started crashing virtually every time I select a Web site to visit. I've switched several favorites to Brave, and they work fine. It's just weird, because Firefox has been so solid for so long. I have a LOT of stuff I use the program for. Does anyone have experience rolling back to an earlier version?

What operating system are you running? I’m on Linux and MacOS without any problems with the latest Firefox release. Haven’t tried it on Windows yet.

I've noticed Firefox freezing up and when I call up the Task Manager, I notice Norton Anti-Virus using a lot memory.

I suspect there's so much attached to these websites from bloatware, Google, government agencies, etc., that it's slowing down due to the anti-virus scanning.

Log out from any site you’re on. Close all tabs except one. Go to Open Application Menu. (3 horizontal lines). Go to history. Clear history. Close browser. Wait a couple minutes. Restart browser.

Mine was crashing also - kept on saying "close Firefox" so I checked on Task Manager - it showed numerous open Firefox apps. I shut those down and restarted but same problem. Then I downloaded and installed the most recent version, #152. So far the problem seems resolved.

HOWEVER, I saw a notice that reads: And we’re not done: coming this fall, a more modern design built around you. Watch the preview, then visit the roadmap to see what we're building next.

What that usually means is that in the name of progress they will screw up my display, change my settings and crash the browser. One big problem they have had for the past dozen years or so is that they went to tabs at the top of the screen instead of previous location below your menu, search and bookmark bars. They consider that location "old school" and will not allow users to modify the display using the "about:support" controls. Instead, and for many past "updates," I have searched their support forums and copied code to place tabs where I want them. I suspect that I will need to do that again. BTW, the main reason I still use Firefox are their extensions. The one I use most and for posting on FR is their "bbCodeWebex" where I can use that app's coding for frequently used HTML tags especially for images and URL tags.

The problem can be a extension you installed.
You can run Firefox in Troubleshoot mode. Click on the hamburger menu button in the upper right corner the Help> Troubleshoot mode

You can also reinstall Firefox after you back up your
bookmarks.

Click on the hamburger menu button in the upper right corner then Manage bookmarks> Import and Backup> save to your Desktop to later Import
Also do Export Bookmarks to HTML

Uninstall Firefox from the Start> Settings> Apps

You can later delete the folder: C:\Users\YOUR name\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox

Install a new copy of Firefox. Import the bookmarks and install any extensions you want like uBlock Orgin (no ads) and Tab Session manager (to backup all the Firefox tabs in case of crash and Firefox does not remember).

In case you want to change the look of Firefox. Ask at the site how to enable the userChrome.css file and how to create it. (Use Notepad. The file is just a text file with the code and the name extension of .css)

On the right side is the link to the how to’s:

Here is my userChrome.css file.

Copy to the chrome folder you create at the profile folder then open Firefox and you will see the changes:
C:\Users\YOUR name\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\YOURS will be named different q5sn3i33.default-release
