Karmelo Anthony's family told CBS News that they believe the trial was unfair from the start. Now Anthony's attorneys have filed an intent to appeal.
A day after the trial, Karmelo Anthony's parents, Andrew Anthony and Kala Hayes, sat down to break their silence and let the world know how they're feeling as their son begins his 35-year sentence for murder in a state prison.
Despite what a jury found, his parents dispute that their son ever wanted to kill Austin Metcalf.
"My son is no murderer," said Hayes. "My son didn't intend to hurt anyone. My son was defending himself, and that's what hurts so bad."
His mother recounts the moments she addressed the jury and made her plea to them during the sentencing phase.
"To have mercy on my son. That's what I told the jury," she said. "I know they had their minds made up already; there really wasn't much I could say to change their minds."
Both parents fought back emotions and tears as they described what they believe was a flawed trial.
"We were delusional," said Andrew Anthony. "We thought we were going to get a fair shake."
They claim there were inconsistencies from the get-go, despite witnesses who took an oath to tell the truth.
"Everyone lied on the stand," Hayes said. "All of the witnesses' statements were inconsistent. All of them."
His father says the court of public opinion had made up their mind about Karmelo Anthony long before this trial began.
"He was convicted when he walked out of the jail," said Andrew Anthony. "If you look at the news, he was already convicted. It was already done. There was no 'innocent until proven guilty,' he was already guilty."
He says the threats of violence against them continue.
"People want us dead," Andrew Anthony said. "After they still got what they wanted... they still want us dead. I go look at my phone, people want us dead. They want our family dead."
Now they're preparing to appeal a judicial process they believe wronged them.
"They did a number on us," Andrew Anthony said. "We didn't get justice. A lot of things that were missed that should have been handled a certain way; however, we couldn't say anything. We did what we were instructed. We did what we were told."

He deserved the death penalty. That would have been fair.
Why didn’t they spend that gofundme money on their SON’S LEGAL TEAM instead of THINGS.
Karmelo’s mom does most of the talking and is main spokesperson in that home. The dad seems mostly a detatched, “Yes, Dear” type and makes me wonder if maybe the Murderer had a different father.
Nope - some crapper, I mean, rapper, is donating $500,000 to him and his fam fam.
Gofundme cut it off and returned the funds before they were distributed, per their longstanding policy of no accounts for defense of persons accused of violent crime.........
Y’all are right, it wasn’t a fair trial. Your boy should have gotten a rope and a tree.
The entire basis of “Black Culture” in the US is delusion.
The verdict.
He was immediately released after arrest (and admission to the crime), he raised $650,000 off his Hate Crime and drove a new Car while his family was in their new house.
You can see why they are surprised. Btw, they just started a new fundraising campaign- saying they’re “penniless.”
Why Federal authorities never crashed the party is a privilege you’ll never have.
Why no one investigated raising money off a murder is a privilege you’ll never possess.
What is the “father” of which you speak?
“Karmelo Anthony’s family claims injustice, says they were “delusional” expecting fair trial”
They do have a point - in a JUST SOCIETY he’d be executed by now.
So why did he have a knife on him at a track meet? So he could cut the finish line tape as he won the race?
35 YEARS for 1st degree murder.
I would have demanded LIFE.
Even the witnesses your defense attorney called? Yeah, probably. Because their testimony only benefitted the prosecution.
“Karmelo’s father said ‘I’m sorry’ to his son in the courtroom.”
Yet not one of Karmelo’s family, including Karmelo, has said “I’m sorry” to Austin’s family.
Austin’s dad was on Rob Schmitt tonight. He said he has forgiven Karmelo, but KA’s family continues to disparage and threaten the Metcalfs. The interview was so sad.
Had Karmelo Anthony expressed some remorse for what he (admittedly) did he would most likely have gotten a lighter sentence than what he got. An expression of remorse matters a lot to juries and to judges. Instead there was no remorse ever, not from him and not even from the parents. They were not sorry for the loss of life regardless of any claim of self defense. Big mistake. Huge.
Indeed. They more media attention given to these scumbags; the more normal Americans conclude that blacks are violently ignorant.
Why didn’t they spend that gofundme money on their SON’S LEGAL TEAM instead of THINGS.

Why pay for a lawyer when a court appointed one would get the same results.
I noticed not even Ben Crump made efforts to glom on to the Anthony (bleep) show.
I live 35 miles away. I read today that he has requested a court-appointed attorney for his appeal. Maybe it’s just me, but that doesn’t sound right. They collected $600,000 on GoFundMyWeed. That is $17,142.85 per year they could have put in Melo’s commissary fund!
