President Trump said on Thursday that he would nominate Jay Clayton, the U.S. attorney in Manhattan and the former chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, to be the next director of national intelligence.
Mr. Trump had been under pressure to move on from his decision to appoint Bill Pulte, a top housing official, as the acting director, replacing Tulsi Gabbard, who announced last month that she would step down from the post.
The appointment of Mr. Pulte derailed the congressional reauthorization of one of the government’s most powerful surveillance authorities. But the announcement of Mr. Clayton to be nominated for Senate confirmation seemed unlikely to immediately solve Mr. Trump’s problems with Congress.
The House on Thursday rejected a three-week extension of the law, which will expire at midnight on Friday. With Congress now out of town, it would be difficult to schedule another vote before the deadline.
Mr. Trump, in a social media post, encouraged the Senate to confirm Mr. Clayton “as soon as possible.”
“Few people anywhere in the Legal Community are respected at the level of Jay."

Golly gee shucks.
Blanche still has a few hurdles getting confirmed for AG also - because Fetterman plus some GOP say they’re a No vote.
The unelected 4th branch of government always gets to have their say.
I still don't see the problem.
Still not picking someone from the intelligence community who knows that the hell is going on and what to do. DNI is not an easy job.
How many times have we seen rinos, including Grahamnesty, leave the chamber after voting to allow a democrat nomination to clear a committee tell us, “The president deserves to get his appointments.”
What? An outbreak of good sense? What is going on?
What? An outbreak of good sense? What is going on?
The real tragedy is Tulsi's exit. Prayers for her and her husband.
Just a slightly different scenario from Democrat presidential nominees, who typically get Yes votes from 110% of the Rat senators and 95% of the Republicans.
Well he has more credentials than Pulte, with none in “intelligence”, but maybe that’s a good thing.
The Deep State and their RINO lackeys only protest when they’re afraid of being exposed .
Watch. The dems and RINOS won’t approve any of Trump’s choices for the job.
Hakeem Jeffries threw a fit and Trump caved because he wants to keep spying on us with FISA. Not happy.
We are being punked.
That’s the game.
I think that was the whole point of nominating him. To kill FISA.
Pulte is an empty suit. He didn’t have the Republican votes in the Senate.
(And, of course, Jeffries and the House had no say in approving a presidential nomination.)
