An NBA Finals watch party in Manhattan descended into violent chaos on Monday night as fans brawled and police deployed pepper spray in a desperate attempt to disperse the crowds.
New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a short-notice big-screen viewing at Bryant Park after the visit of president Donald Trump to Madison Square Garden forced the cancelation of a previously-planned event outside the arena itself.
5,000 free tickets were dished out to Knicks fans to watch Game 3 of the NBA Finals, but scenes turned ugly midway through the night, leading to riot police being deployed.
It is understood the violent scenes unfolded on the streets outside the viewing party, and clips posted on social media saw huge crowds of Knicks fans brawling.
In one video, published by Freedom News TV, two men can be seen swinging punches at each other while being cheered on by a large group, before others jump in and join in with the violence.
Others are filming the fight, and at one point a man swings around a large tree branch, before a man dressed as a superhero tries to break up the violence.
Later in the clip, a long line of NYPD officers are deployed to restore order in the crowd, and one can be seen firing pepper spray towards the crowds, shoving away particularly rowdy fans.
The unsavory scenes occurred midway through the game, and did not appear to be sparked by the Knicks losing the Game 3 showdown against the San Antonio Spurs.
Later in the night, other fans were seen clambering over police cars as thousands of fans gathered outside the watch party.
Many of those involved in the violent scenes on the street appeared to have not been granted entry to the ticketed event on the grass inside Bryant Park.

I read the title of the article, and thought at least Mamdani isn’t responsible for this outbreak of violence. But by golly, he is.
All I want to know is where was the president when all of this predictable mayhem began to happen?
What a complete surprise! Not really.
Do I really need to see the video to see what shade the culprits are?
Chimpin’ out ...
Welcome to the jungle. Win or lose, NYC will burn. Make much popcorn.
The president of New York?
They’re probably the African mercenaries obama hired.
The Mamdani Touch, everything he touches turns to shite.
Previously know as the reverse Midas touch
The fatigue is real.
A bump. ‘Hey, what chu doin’?’
‘Nuthin. What chu doin’?’
That’s all it takes.
“The Mamdani Touch, everything he touches turns to shite.”
He is a Twelver Shiite same as the apocalyptic crud that rules Iran. His father is too.
That city is beyond help. Perhaps it’s time to build a wall around it.
Knicks fans clash with cops in chaotic scene outside Bryant Park Game 3 watch party
I used to enjoy going to NYC once in awhile. Especially after 9/11. I thought it was my patriotic duty to try to support the city.
Especially after Rudy and Bloomberg made it the safest big city in the world(Stop and Frisk worked).
Now, I will not go near there.
My wife’s dogs are in Westminster almost every year. During Covid they held the show up in Terrytown, NY. Westchester county. Easy to drive into. Hotels are a lot cheaper. It doesn’t cost money to park, etc. They had it there two years. Now, it is back in the city. We have not gone since.
PEPPER SPRAY NEEDS TO BE DEPLOYED FROM A FIRE HOSE-———
Mandami , zero qualifications and a moron
Rudy’s “Broken Window” approach was also quite successful - clamp down on the small crimes to reduce big ones.
Now, anything goes in NYC city and other D hellholes. The police are still trying (mostly) but it’s catch-and-release for any crime, big or small.
